During the first night of finals at the 2017 European Short Course Championships in Copenhagen,\u00a0the European record was tied in the men’s 50 breast semi-finals, and then three men broke the mark in the final, all finishing within eight hundredths of each other.<\/p>\n

That 50 breast was one of six finals contested on the first evening of the meet. Along with the two European records in the 50 breast, three world junior records were either broken or established. Read below for event-by-event full coverage of what happened on night one.<\/p>\n

Full results<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n

Men’s 50 Breast Semi-finals<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Russia’s\u00a0Kirill Prigoda\u00a0<\/strong>tied\u00a0Fabio Scozzoli’s\u00a0<\/strong>European record in qualifying first for the men’s 50 breast final, posting a mark of 25.72. Scozolli previously swam that time back in August of 2013 in Berlin.<\/p>\n

It won’t be an easy path for Prigoda to take gold, however, as Scozzoli, representing Italy, qualified second in 25.74, just two hundredths back, while Great Britain’s\u00a0Adam Peaty<\/strong>, the long course World Champion and world record-holder, took third in 25.81.<\/p>\n

Belarus’\u00a0Ilya Shymanovich<\/strong>\u00a0(25.96) and Slovenia’s\u00a0Peter John Stevens\u00a0<\/strong>(25.97) also got under the 26-second mark, and joining them in the final will be Germany’s\u00a0Fabien Schwingenschlogl\u00a0<\/strong>(26.02), Turkey’s\u00a0Huseyin Emre Sakci<\/strong>\u00a0(26.18) and Italian world junior record-setter\u00a0Nicolo Marginenghi<\/strong>\u00a0(26.31).<\/p>\n

\"men-50-breast-semi\"<\/p>\n

Women’s 50 Breast Semi-Finals<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Lithuania’s\u00a0Ruta Meilutyte\u00a0<\/strong>carried the top seed into the women’s 50 breast final at the European championships, recording a mark of 29.72 in the second of two semi-final heats to edge out the 29.85 that Sweden’s\u00a0Sophie Hansson<\/strong>\u00a0recorded in the first semi.<\/p>\n

Finland’s\u00a0Jenna Laukkanen<\/strong>\u00a0qualified third in 29.90, and Poland’s\u00a0Dominika Sztandera<\/strong>\u00a0also got under 30 seconds, finishing at 29.95.<\/p>\n

Others qualifying for the final were Italy’s\u00a0Arianna Castiglioni<\/strong>\u00a0(30.01), Island’s\u00a0Hrafnhilda Luthersdottir<\/strong>\u00a0(30.03),\u00a0Russia’s\u00a0Natalia Ivaneeva<\/strong>\u00a0(30.06) and Belgium’s\u00a0Fanny Lecluyse\u00a0<\/strong>(30.17).<\/p>\n

Men’s 200 Back FINAL<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Russia’s\u00a0Kliment Kolesnikov\u00a0<\/strong>has won the first gold medal of the European Short Course Championships, swimming past Poland’s\u00a0Radoslaw Kawecki<\/strong>\u00a0on the final lap to touch first.<\/p>\n

Kawecki, the reigning World Short Course Champion in the event, led for the entire race before Kolesnikov closed in 27.32, to Kawecki’s 28.19. The Russian 17-year-old pulled into the wall in 1:48.02, establishing the first world junior record in the event.<\/p>\n

The time also broke\u00a0Kawecki’s championship record of 1:48.33 set two years ago.<\/p>\n

Kawecki took the silver in 1:48.46, and Lithuania’s\u00a0Danas Rapsys\u00a0<\/strong>also got on the podium with his time of 1:49.06.<\/p>\n

Israel’s\u00a0Yakov Yan Toumarkin<\/strong>\u00a0ended up fourth in 1:51.05, followed by Croatia’s\u00a0Anton Loncar<\/strong>\u00a0(1:51.67), Belarus’\u00a0Mikita Tsmyh<\/strong>\u00a0(1:52.04)\u00a0and Hungary’s\u00a0David Foldhazi\u00a0<\/strong>(1:52.92).<\/p>\n

Germany’s\u00a0Christian Diener<\/strong>, the top seed out of prelims, was in contention most of the race but faded all the way to eighth on the final lap, touching in 1:53.41.<\/p>\n

\"men-200-back-final\"<\/p>\n

Women’s 400 IM FINAL<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Hungary’s\u00a0Katinka Hosszu<\/strong>\u00a0led wire-to-wire on her way to\u00a0a European title\u00a0in one of her signature events, the 400 IM. Even without approaching top form, she was still by far the class of the field, leading by almost a second at the 50-meter mark and extending her lead from there.<\/p>\n

Hosszu finished in 4:24.78, well off\u00a0Mireia Belmonte’s\u00a0<\/strong>world record of 4:18.94 set n August or Hosszu’s own championship record of 4:19.46 from two years ago. With Belmonte skipping the meet, Hosszu was never going to be challenged here.<\/p>\n

France swept the other two spots on the podium with\u00a0Lara Grangeon\u00a0<\/strong>finishing second in 4:28.77 and\u00a0Fantine Lesaffre\u00a0<\/strong>taking third in 4:30.68.<\/p>\n

Italy’s\u00a0Ilaria Cusinato\u00a0<\/strong>was next at 4:32.85, and rounding out the final were Spain’s\u00a0Africa Zamorano<\/strong>\u00a0(4:35.45), Portugal’s\u00a0Victoria Kaminskaya\u00a0<\/strong>(4:36.19), Hungary’s\u00a0Boglarka Kapas\u00a0<\/strong>(4:38.08) and Great Britain’s\u00a0Emily Large\u00a0<\/strong>(4:39.01).<\/p>\n

\"women-400-im\"<\/p>\n

Men’s 400 Free FINAL<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Russia’s\u00a0Aleksandr Krasnykh<\/strong>\u00a0pulled away from the field and ended up winning a comfortable victory in the men’s 400 free final in Copenhagen. Krasnykh\u00a0touched in 3:35.51, less than a second off an eight-year-old championship record held by\u00a0Paul Biedermann<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Hungary’s\u00a0Peter Bernek\u00a0<\/strong>grabbed the silver in 3:37.14, and Norway’s\u00a0Henrik Christiansen<\/strong>\u00a0got bronze, finishing in 3:38.63.<\/p>\n

Sweden’s\u00a0Victor Johansson<\/strong>\u00a0(3:39.35) and Poland’s\u00a0Filip Zaborowski<\/strong>\u00a0(3:39.84) also got under 3:40, and rounding out the field were Krasnykh’s Russian teammate\u00a0Viacheslav Andrusenko<\/strong>\u00a0(3:40.70),\u00a0Dutch open water specialist\u00a0Ferry Weertman<\/strong>\u00a0(3:42.00) and Sweden’s\u00a0Adam Paulsson<\/strong>\u00a0(3:43.63).<\/p>\n

\"men-400-free\"<\/del><\/p>\n

Women’s 100 Back Semi-finals<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The Netherlands’\u00a0Kira Toussaint\u00a0<\/strong>posted the top seed in the semi-finals of the women’s 100 back, stopping the clock at 56.80 in semi-final No. 1. That was good enough to beat out the mark posted by Hungary’s\u00a0Katinka Hosszu<\/strong>\u00a0in the second semi.<\/p>\n

Hosszu, fresh off winning gold in the 400 IM,\u00a0touched\u00a0in 56.88, and she was well ahead of Russia’s\u00a0Maria Kameneva<\/strong>\u00a0(57.45) and Ukraine’s\u00a0Daryna Zevina<\/strong>\u00a0(57.79).<\/p>\n

It took a time of 57.79 or better to make the final, with\u00a0Denmark’s\u00a0Mie Nielsen<\/strong>\u00a0(57.71), France’s\u00a0Mathilde Cini<\/strong>\u00a0(57.73), the Czech Republic’s\u00a0Simona Baumrtova\u00a0<\/strong>(57.79) and Poland’s\u00a0Alicja Tchorz<\/strong>\u00a0(57.79) getting in.<\/p>\n

Italy’s\u00a0Federica Pellegrini<\/strong>, competing in the meet although not in her traditional 200 free, missed the final with a 10th-place time of 57.98.<\/p>\n

\"women-100-back-semi\"<\/p>\n

Men’s 100 Fly Semi-finals<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Italy’s\u00a0Matteo Rivolta\u00a0<\/strong>came out on top of a deep field full of more established stars to earn the top seed for the men’s 100 fly final at the European Short Course Championships. Rivolta finished in 50.01, a quarter-second ahead of Poland’s\u00a0Konrad Czerniak<\/strong>, who qualified second in 50.26.<\/p>\n

Russia’s\u00a0Aleksandr Kharlanov<\/strong>\u00a0won the second semi-final in 50.28 to secure lane three for the final, and he was followed by countryman\u00a0Aleksandr Sadovnikov<\/strong>\u00a0(50.43), the Netherlands’\u00a0Joeri Verlinden\u00a0<\/strong>(50.44) and Germany’s\u00a0Marius Kusch<\/strong>\u00a0(50.49).<\/p>\n

Italy’s\u00a0Piero Codia\u00a0<\/strong>(50.62) and Belarus’\u00a0Yauhen Tsurkin<\/strong>\u00a0(50.63) took seventh and eighth, respectively. Hungary’s\u00a0Laszlo Cseh<\/strong>, the co-Olympic silver medalist in the event, missed out on the final in 10th position, touching in 50.84.<\/p>\n

\"men-100-fly-semi\"<\/p>\n

Women’s 50 Breast\u00a0FINAL<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Lithuania’s\u00a0Ruta Meilutyte\u00a0<\/strong>won the European title in the women’s 50 breast in a time of 29.36, having just enough in the tank to get by Finland’s\u00a0Jenna Laukkanen<\/strong>\u00a0at the finish.<\/p>\n

Meilutyte finished in 29.26, followed by Laukkanen\u00a0in 29.77. Not far away was\u00a0Sophie Hansson<\/strong>, as the Swedish teenager grabbed the bronze in 29.77.<\/p>\n

Poland’s\u00a0Dominka Sztandera<\/strong>\u00a0finished fourth in 29.82, and rounding out the field were Island’s\u00a0Hrafnhilda Luthersdottir\u00a0<\/strong>(30.06), Italy’s\u00a0Arianna Castiglioni\u00a0<\/strong>(30.06), Belgium’s\u00a0Fanny Lecluyse\u00a0<\/strong>(30.11) and Russia’s\u00a0Natalia Ivaneeva\u00a0<\/strong>(30.31).<\/p>\n

Men’s 50 Breast FINAL<\/strong><\/h3>\n

After\u00a0Kirill Prigoda\u00a0<\/strong>tied\u00a0Fabio Scozzoli’s\u00a0<\/strong>European record in the men’s 50 breast semi-finals, Scozzoli came back just an hour later to lower the record and win a European title.<\/p>\n

Italy’s Scozzoli won the event in 25.62,\u00a0six\u00a0hundredths ahead of Russia’s Prigoda, in 25.68. And then Prigoda was just two hundredths ahead of Great Britain’s\u00a0Adam Peaty<\/strong>, who took the bronze in 25.70.<\/p>\n

All three men beat the previous European record, first set by Scozzoli in 2013 and then tied by Prigoda in the semi-finals.<\/p>\n

Germany’s\u00a0Fabian Schwingenschlogl\u00a0<\/strong>took fourth in 25.99, followed by Belarus’\u00a0Ilya Shymanovich<\/strong>\u00a0(26.02), Slovenia’s\u00a0Peter John Stevens\u00a0<\/strong>(26.11), Turkey’s\u00a0Huseyin Emre Sakci<\/strong>\u00a0(26.19) and Italy’s\u00a0Nicolo Martinenghi<\/strong>\u00a0(26.48).<\/p>\n

Men’s 200 Free Relay FINAL<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The Russian men won gold in the men’s 200 free relay to round out the first night of the European short course meet.\u00a0Kliment Kolesnikov\u00a0<\/strong>(21.24),\u00a0Vladimir Morozov\u00a0<\/strong>(20.59),\u00a0Sergei Fesikov\u00a0<\/strong>(20.59) and\u00a0Mikhail Vekovishchev\u00a0<\/strong>(20.91) combined to swim a time of 1:23.32.<\/p>\n

Kolesnikov’s time is a world junior record, the first ever set in the SCM men’s 50 free. Fesikov pulled the Russians into first place on his leg, and Vekovischchev held on.<\/p>\n

Italy’s\u00a0Luca Dotto<\/strong>,\u00a0Lorenzo Zazzeri<\/strong>,\u00a0Alessandro Miressi<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0Marco Orsi<\/strong>\u00a0grabbed the silver in 1:23.67, and Poland’s squad of\u00a0Pawel Juraszek<\/strong>,\u00a0Filip Wypych<\/strong>,\u00a0Jakub Ksiazek\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0Konrad Czerniak<\/strong>\u00a0took third in 1:24.44.<\/p>\n

The Netherlands (1:24.61), Serbia (1:25.55), Hungary (1:25.55), Belgium (1:25.92) and Sweden (1:26.09) also swam in the final.<\/p>\n
