VIAREGGIO, Italy, November 19. THE Italian Grand Prix held in Viareggio featured some strong short course meter swimming with Federica Pellegrini posting a swift 200 free time, while plenty of other swimmers doubled up.<\/p>\n
Pellegrini led off the evening with a 1:55.32 to dominate the women's 200 free. That swim moved her to 12th in the world rankings in the event. Martina De Memme (1:59.57) and Alice Nesti (1:59.58) placed second and third. <\/p>\n
In a battle between two top-five swimmers this year, Marco Orsi matched Russia's Sergey Fesikov with 21.80s in the men's 50 free. Fesikov owns the top ranked time with a 21.09 from the Russian Short Course Nationals, while Orsi is fourth with a 21.44 from the Italian Short Course Nationals. Federico Bocchia took third this evening in 22.26. <\/p>\n
Fesikov returned in the men's 100 free with a winning time of 47.96. That time came up short of his third-ranked 47.03 also from Russian Nationals. Orsi earned second in 48.06, while Luca Dotto took third in 48.57.<\/p>\n
Russia's Evgeny Korotyshkin topped the men's 50 fly in 23.81, well off his fifth-ranked season best of22.95 from the Berlin stop of the World Cup. Piero Codia (24.27) and Paolo Facchinelli (24.33) picked up second and third-place honors. Korotyshkin doubled up with a 52.07 in the men's 100 fly. He's been much faster this year with a top-ranked 50.04 from the Berlin stop of the World Cup. Codia (53.70) and Facchinelli (54.29) also took second and third in this event. <\/p>\n
Russia's Anastasia Zueva hit the wall in 27.41 to win the women's 50 back. Elena Gemo touched second in 27.70, while Lucia Martelli placed third in 28.58. Zueva also doubled with a 57.70 in the women's 100 back. That swim came up just short of her ninth-ranked season best of 57.65 from Russian Nationals. Gemo finished second again with a 58.98, while Valentina De Nardi finished third in 1:02.38. <\/p>\n
Nicolo Ossola took home the men's 50 breast in 27.70, while Alessandro Terrin placed second in 27.96. Andrea Toniato picked up third in 28.10. Ossola picked up his second win with a 1:00.67 in the men's 100 breast. Toniato touched second in 1:01.05, while Daniele Cremonesi finished third in 1:01.08.<\/p>\n
Erika Ferraioli clinched the women's 50 free title in 25.76. Gigliola Tecchio (26.12) and Lucrezia Raco (26.35) completed the podium. Farreioli earned her second gold of the night with a 55.43 in the women's 100 free. Beatrice Fassone finished second in 55.90, while Alice Nesti and Silvia Florio tied for third with matching 56.83s.<\/p>\n
Filippo Magnini snared the men's 200 free crown in 1:45.07. Cesare Sciocchetti (1:46.33) and Gianluca Maglia (1:46.56) rounded out the podium. <\/p>\n
Silvia Di Pietro clinched the women's 50 fly title in 27.12, edging Ilaria Bianchi (27.19) in the process. Chiara Mazzoni earned third in 27.59. Elena Di Liddo topped the women's 100 fly in 58.88, while Ilaria Bianchi touched second in 59.06. Di Pietro wound up third in 1:00.51. <\/p>\n
Mirco Di Tora stopped the clock in 24.46 to win the men's 50 back. Damiano Lestingi (24.57) and Stefano Pizzamiglio (24.88) took second and third. Lestingi bounced back in the 100 back with a winning 52.49. Matteo Milli placed second in 53.37, while Pizzamiglio finished third in 53.77.<\/p>\n
Ombretta Plos claimed the women's 50 breast in 31.88, while Nicol Valentini took second in 32.39. Elisa Antonelli wound up third in 32.43. Chiara Boggiatto topped the women's 100 breast in 1:08.66, while Valentini placed second in 1:09.37. Ombretta Plos pocketed third in 1:09.40. <\/p>\n
Luisa Trombetti cruised to victory in the women's 200 IM with a 2:14.70. Carlotta Toni (2:17.66) and Valentina Pompili (2:18.38) rounded out the top three.
