﻿{"id":288076,"date":"2017-12-12T07:02:14","date_gmt":"2017-12-12T14:02:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=288076"},"modified":"2017-12-12T07:02:14","modified_gmt":"2017-12-12T14:02:14","slug":"le-clos-van-der-burgh-to-headline-south-african-commonwealth-games-trials","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/le-clos-van-der-burgh-to-headline-south-african-commonwealth-games-trials\/","title":{"rendered":"Le Clos, Van Der Burgh to Headline South African Commonwealth Games Trials"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Johannesburg\u00a0&#8211;\u00a0Olympians <strong>Chad le Clos<\/strong> and <strong>Cameron van der Burgh<\/strong> will be among Mzansi\u2019s aquatic stars who will be taking to the water at the KwaZulu-Natal Aquatics Premier Championships, doubling as the official Commonwealth Games Trials, taking place at the Kings Park Aquatics Centre in Durban, from\u00a0<span data-term=\"goog_1537698333\">16 \u2013 22 December 2017<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Four hundred and sixty (460) swimmers will compete to secure a place in the final team that will be selected to represent SA in the 2018 Commonwealth Games in the Gold Coast, Australia from 4<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0to 15<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0April 2018.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Straight from his fourth FINA World Cup title win, Chad le Clos will be looking to secure his place at next year\u2019s competition when he participated in the 50, 100 and 200m butterfly as well as the 100 and 200m freestyle.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Also determined to book his place in the Commonwealth Team will be Olympic gold-medalist Cameron van der Burgh, who will race the 50 and 100m breaststroke events.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other contenders include the likes of <strong>Douglas Erasmus<\/strong> in the 50 and 100m freestyle, long-distance swimmer <strong>Matthew Meyer<\/strong> in the 400m freestyle and the 1500m freestyle as well as the up and coming talents of <strong>Luca Holtzhausen<\/strong> (13), <strong>Luan Grobbelaar<\/strong> (15), <strong>Mariella Venter<\/strong> (17), <strong>Hanim Abrahams<\/strong> (15), <strong>Erin Gallagher<\/strong> (18) and <strong>Dune Coetzee<\/strong> (15).<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On the ladies\u2019 side, 20 year old <strong>Tatjana Schoenmaker<\/strong>, who recently became the first South African to win a medal (silver) at the 2017 World Student Games in Taipei, with a personal best of 2:24.61, will be looking to better that time over the weeklong event, swimming the 50, 100 and 200m breaststroke, the 200m freestyle and the 200m individual medley.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Swimming South Africa\u2019s CEO, <strong>Shaun Adriaanse<\/strong>, said\u00a0&#8220;Our swimmers have a history of rising to the challenge to qualify for the Commonwealth Games and to compete for the highest honours at the Games.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe wish all athletes the best of luck in striving for their best to Qualify for the Games,&#8221;
