BERKELEY, California, November 19. CALIFORNIA's decorated women's swimming head coach Teri McKeever added to her collection of accolades when she recently earned the YMCA Impact Award and the C. Vivian Stringer Coaching Award.<\/p>\n
Now in her 20th year at the helm of the Golden Bear program, McKeever reached the pinnacle of her profession at the college level in leading Cal to the NCAA team championship last season and in 2009. She also climbed to the summit of international swimming when she became the head coach of the U.S. women's swimmers for the 2012 Summer Olympic Games in London.<\/p>\n
McKeever is the first woman to work as a U.S. swimming head coach in the Olympics and was the first woman to coach on a U.S. swimming Olympic coaching staff as an assistant in 2004; she was also a U.S. assistant in the 2008 Olympics.<\/p>\n
To honor her lasting impact within the swimming world and in the lives of those she has worked with, the YMCA of the Central Bay Area lauded McKeever at its annual celebration and fundraising event. Called "Changing Lives, Changing Communities," the evening celebrated the impact of the Y and its partners in fostering meaningful and lasting change in the community. The event recognized those who work side by side with the Y to promote youth development, healthy living and social responsibility.<\/p>\n
The U.S. Sports Academy annually presents the C. Vivian Stringer Coaching Award to a person such as McKeever who has experienced outstanding achievement as a coach for female teams. In addition, the coaching award honors women who exhibit a high standard of propriety, imagination and innovation as a character-builder in the tradition of great teacher-coaches. <\/p>\n
Early in the 2011-12 season, McKeever's Bears have compiled a 3-0 overall record (3-0 in the Pac-12 Conference). They are currently swimming in the Arena Invitational from Nov. 17-19 in Long Beach, Calif.<\/p>\n
