PHOENIX, Arizona, November 17. A couple of meets took place last night, one of them a historic first, while the other featured some racing at the collegiate level. <\/p>\n
The opening night of the first pro league dual meet at the University of Michigan featured some pretty fast times by postgraduate professional swimmers looking to raise interest in meets that offer cash prizes, something not regularly done in the United States. Darian Townsend was the top swimmer last night, winning the 200 IM and 200 free. Townsend, an Olympic gold medalist training at the University of Arizona, swam a 2:01.29 in the IM, which is a few tenths faster than he swam last weekend at the Minnesota Grand Prix, and won the 200 free in 1:50.14.<\/p>\n
Eugene Godsoe also swam faster last night than he did in Minnesota, winning the 100 back with a 54.64, about second faster than he swam last weekend. Jason Dunford, an Olympic finalist in the 100 fly for Kenya, won the 50 fly with a 23.96, and George Bovell, who appears to be recovering well after suffering a massive car accident last August, won the 50 free in 22.77 and split 22.1 on the end of the 200 medley relay. The East team has an 18-point lead over the West team after the first day.<\/p>\n

Amanda Kendall and Breeja Larson were the standouts at last night’s Tennessee Invite in Knoxville. Kendall won the 50 free for LSU in 22.36, which is second-fastest in the country. Kendall was likely not rested for the race, since she just came off a taper at the Pan American Games. Larson set up what could be a fast 100 breast today with a 58.50 split for Texas A&M’s 400 medley relay. The meet has an interesting setup: prelims are swum in long course meters, with finals in short course yards.
