Tonight, it is her turn to take center stage.\u00a016-year-old\u00a0<strong>Alex Walsh\u00a0<\/strong>of Nashville Aquatic Club put up one of the most impressive doubles in junior nationals history. She swam a 58.19 100 breast to smash her NAG record in the 15-16 age group and then swam a 51.45 to narrowly miss\u00a0<strong>Regan Smith<\/strong>&#8216;s NAG record by 0.15 seconds. Walsh is still only a sophomore in high school and put up times that would have scored top 16 at last year&#8217;s NCAA&#8217;s. Her 100 breast would have been third while her 100 back would have been 12th.<\/p>\n<p>There were plenty of other impressive swims including\u00a0<strong>Emily Weiss<\/strong>&#8216;s record breaking 100 breast in finishing second to Walsh, as well as a meet record in the 400 IM from\u00a0<strong>Kieran Smith<\/strong>. In that same race,\u00a0<strong>Carson Foster\u00a0<\/strong>swam the second fastest 400 IM by a 15-16-year-old behind only\u00a0<strong>Michael Phelps<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>16-year-olds were making plenty of waves in the pool as\u00a0<strong>Destin Lasco\u00a0<\/strong>closed the session with a 46.73 in the 100 back to win the race and sit only behind\u00a0<strong>Mike Thomas\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0<strong>Ryan Murphy\u00a0<\/strong>in the all-time rankings in the 15-16 age group.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/vmrw8k5h.tinifycdn.com\/results\/pdf\/2017-winter-junior-nationals-east-friday-finals-heat-sheets-day-3-usa-age-group-2017-12-08.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">Heat Sheets<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/vmrw8k5h.tinifycdn.com\/results\/pdf\/2017-winter-junior-nationals-east-friday-finals-results-day-3-usa-age-group-2017-12-08.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">Results<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Tonight&#8217;s events:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>400 IM<\/li>\n<li>100 Fly<\/li>\n<li>200 Free<\/li>\n<li>100 Breast<\/li>\n<li>100 Back<\/li>\n<li>200 Medley Relay<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Women&#8217;s 400 IM<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Olivia Carter\u00a0<\/strong>of Enfinity Aquatics took the first final of the night with a 4:09.94 to win the 400 IM. Carter is now 50th all-time in the 17-18 age group with that swim as she is a few spots below 1992 Olympic bronze medalist\u00a0<strong>Summer Sanders<\/strong>. Carter held off a strong finish from\u00a0<strong>Kelly Pash\u00a0<\/strong>(4:10.97) and\u00a0<strong>Madison Homovich\u00a0<\/strong>(4:11.82). The younger Foster moved up to second all-time in the 15-16 rankings behind the two-time Olympic champion\u00a0<strong>Michael Phelps<\/strong>. She had the only sub-28 second last 50 in the field as Dynamo&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Tristen Ulett\u00a0<\/strong>was second (52.94) and Carmel&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Trude Rothrock\u00a0<\/strong>finished in third (53.02).<\/p>\n<p>Albiero is now 10th all-time in the 15-16 age group just ahead of <strong>Katie Hoff\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0Ulett is now 29th all-time in the same age group behind 2004 Olympian\u00a0<strong>Dana Kirk<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Tonner Debeer\u00a0<\/strong>(53.03),\u00a0<strong>Gretchen Walsh<\/strong> (53.07),\u00a0<strong>Talia Bates\u00a0<\/strong>(53.09),\u00a0<strong>Claire Curzan\u00a0<\/strong>(53.85) and\u00a0<strong>Julia Menkhaus\u00a0<\/strong>(53.88) also swam in the A-final.<\/p>\n<p>That was a particularly young field with two girls in the 13-14 age group with Walsh and Curzan. Bybee tied for 22nd all-time in the\u00a017-18 rankings with former Stanford swimmer\u00a0<strong>Matt McDonald<\/strong> as Kibler is now tied for 38th with\u00a0<strong>Chris Brady\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0<strong>Kyle Gornay<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Gator&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Mason Wilby\u00a0<\/strong>finished in third with a 47.33 as him and Bybee were the only swimmers coming home in under 25 seconds on the second 50. Pash is now 20th all-time in the 15-16 age group just a few spots ahead of three-time Olympian\u00a0<strong>Dana Vollmer<\/strong>. Reigning\u00a0<em>Swimming World\u00a0<\/em>high school swimmer of the year\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/swimming-world-presents-powerhouse-of-positivity-getting-to-know-morgan-tankersley\/\" target=\"_blank\">Morgan Tankersley<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>finished in third at 1:45.84. Freeman won the final with a 1:33.98 as he was a little off of\u00a0<strong>Drew Kibler<\/strong>&#8216;s meet record of 1:33.40. Nonetheless, Freeman is now 11th all-time in the 17-18 age group with that swim just behind\u00a0<strong>Caeleb Dressel<\/strong>. Weiss was also under the old record in second place with a 58.77.<\/p>\n<p>For reference, Walsh&#8217;s time would have been third at NCAA&#8217;s a year ago behind only American Record holder\u00a0<strong>Lilly King\u00a0<\/strong>(56.30) and\u00a0national high school record holder\u00a0<strong>Lindsey Horejsi\u00a0<\/strong>(58.03). And the crazy part is, Walsh is still only a sophomore in high school.<\/p>\n<p>This is the second NAG record for Walsh on the weekend after she beat the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/alex-walsh-sneaks-under-15-16-nag-record-with-154-02-200-im\/\" target=\"_blank\">200 IM<\/a>\u00a0record last night.<\/p>\n<p>Weiss is\u00a0still\u00a0only a junior, but has already\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/world-jr-team-member-emily-weiss-verbally-commits-to-indianas-class-of-2023\/\">committed to swim<\/a>\u00a0at Indiana to join King when she is a senior. Weiss is coming off a successful summer where she was the World Junior Champion in the 50 breast where she was also a teammate with Walsh. These two will be names to watch as we move forward to the 2020 Olympic Trials. Why is it impressive? Walsh was just minutes out of going a 58.19 in the 100 breast not long ago, and came back to almost break another NAG record. Walsh nearly even-split the race, going out in 25.43 and coming back in 26.02.
