{"id":287110,"date":"2017-12-06T12:00:04","date_gmt":"2017-12-06T19:00:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=287110"},"modified":"2017-12-06T08:36:57","modified_gmt":"2017-12-06T15:36:57","slug":"lumalanes-performance-of-the-week-zane-grothe-shatters-american-record-in-the-mile","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/lumalanes-performance-of-the-week-zane-grothe-shatters-american-record-in-the-mile\/","title":{"rendered":"LumaLanes Performance of the Week: Zane Grothe Shatters American Record in the Mile"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This week\u2019s Performance Of The Week, <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.lumalanes.com\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sponsored by LumaLanes<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, goes to <\/span><b>Zane Grothe <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">for <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/zane-grothe-unleashes-1418-25-american-record-in-the-1650-free\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">his record breaking swim in the 1650 free<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> at\u00a0U.S Winter Nationals in Columbus, Ohio, this past weekend.<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"oembed-wrap\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"LumaLanes Performance of the Week -- Dec. 6, 2017 -- Zane Grothe\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/NGDXkgFAuUw?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unless you were living under a rock, you likely heard about Grothe\u2019s dramatic entrance into the short course yards record books, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/zane-grothe-smashes-american-record-in-500-free-to-break-408-for-first-time\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">first with his 500 free<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (where he became the first man to break 4:08) which he followed up two days later with an even more dramatic 1650 free. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/the-legend-of-zane-grothe-grows-with-record-crushing-mile\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For context<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Grothe was gunning for one of the most impressive records to come out of last year\u2019s insanely fast men\u2019s NCAA Championships: <\/span><b>Clark Smith\u2019s <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">14:22.41. That swim was the result of a heated race down to the wire between four men, while Grothe attacked this swim all on his own with nothing but the clock pushing him. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Out in 4:17.41 at the 500 and 8:40.47 at the 1000, the 25-year-old held 26-lows for much of the race to chop an incredible 4 plus seconds off of Smith\u2019s record. Speaking after the race, Grothe said he knew he had a shot of the record for the better part of last year after swimming a 14:29 on no rest last winter and was looking to his coach to make sure he was on pace to break 14:20. While we\u2019ll have to wait to see how Grothe\u2019s times will translate into long course, you can bet that all eyes will be on the Indiana post-grad as we head into the new year.
