RALEIGH, North Carolina, November 12. THE NC State men's swimming and diving team defeated the College of Charleston, while the women topped the College of Charleston and Campbell this afternoon, Nov. 12, at the Willis R. Casey Aquatic Center.
\nThe No. 19 Wolfpack men defeated CofC 173-100, moving to 5-1 (2-1 ACC) while the women topped CofC 184-91, and beat Campbell 192-76 to earn a 6-2 (1-2 ACC) record.<\/p>\n
"We had a great turnout for the meet with the College of Charleston and Campbell, there was a lot of energy on deck," said head coach Braden Holloway.<\/p>\n
Both the men and women took first in every event. In diving, Hudson Rains and Ryan Smith took first and second on the 1-meter, while Hannah Hopkins, Kirstyn Shepler, and Rachael Mumma took first, second and third, respectively.<\/p>\n
For the NC State men, Brandon Kingston, David Williams, Greg Baskwell and Gaites Brown each picked up two wins on the day.<\/p>\n
Julianna Prim and Hannah Freyman both won two events for the Wolfpack women. Freyman's time of 2:02.48 in the 200 backstroke is the fastest time on the team this year.<\/p>\n
"On the Wolfpack side of things, the divers were great on the 1-meter today, and we had some great standouts in the pool all across the board," Holloway said. "A time like this, heading into the last bit of the fall, no matter what events we're swimming it's always good to get some good quality racing in."<\/p>\n
The meet also provided an opportunity for all three swimming and diving programs to show their support for the University of Maryland, which announced earlier this week that it would be cutting swimming and diving.<\/p>\n
"It was great to see all the teams come together in support of Maryland's swimming and diving program," said Holloway. "Everyone really came together today to support the cause of the Terps staying in the sport."<\/p>\n
The NC State men and women made signs for the Terps, and many athletes swam with "save the Terps" written on their backs. Following the conclusion of the meet, all of the teams gathered to take a picture with the signs supporting Maryland.<\/p>\n
The Wolfpack will return to action Thursday, Nov. 17 for the Maryland Invitational in College Park, Md.<\/p>\n
