Leah Smith<\/strong> has emerged as one of the world\u2019s next distance freestylers…and 400 IMers (her winning time at the U.S. World Championship Trials ranks fifth in the world this year).<\/p>\n

Consider Smith\u2019s upbringing, and it\u2019s not a shocker that she\u2019s passionate about winning: her great-uncle, Billy Conn<\/strong>, was a world light heavyweight boxing champion. Her great-grandfather, Jimmy Smith<\/strong>, was a World Series champion. Her older sister, Aileen<\/strong>, swam at Columbia. Her dad, Dan<\/strong>, was a pole vaulter and decathlete at UVA.<\/p>\n

Leah is the third of four siblings\u2014no doubt her brothers and sister unintentionally refined Leah\u2019s competitive drive. Swimming World<\/em> recently spoke with Dan<\/strong> Smith<\/strong> about his daughter, Leah\u2014a girl who hates to lose.<\/p>\n

Author\u00a0Annie Grevers<\/strong> and Dan discuss how he and his wife,\u00a0Margee<\/strong>, knew Leah was a talented swimmer, how swimming has shaped Leah’s character, and wha advice he would give to new swim parents.<\/p>\n
