At the 1,000-yard mark Grothe split an 8:40.47, making him the third fastest man in the 1,000 distance behind only\u00a0<strong>Clark Smith<\/strong> and\u00a0<strong>Erik Vendt<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The speed continued for Grothe as he propelled four, five, and six seconds ahead of the American Record splits, lapping competitors in the process.<\/p>\n<p>Grothe stopped the clock at a stunning 14:18.25, establishing himself as the new American, U.S. Open, and Championship record holder.<\/p>\n<p>His success at day four arrives just two days after <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/zane-grothe-smashes-american-record-in-500-free-to-break-408-for-first-time\/\" target=\"_blank\">establishing a new American Record in the 500-yard freestyle<\/a>. Carvin had set the record at a 14:34.91 in March of 1994, but Dolan quickly lowered it to a 14:29.31 in 1995.
