THE men&#39;s and women&#39;s swimming and diving are likely to be cut at the University of Maryland, according to a report by the <i>Washington Post<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p>Citing knowledge of a meeting yesterday with Athletic Director Kevin Anderson, the <i>Post<\/i> has reported that men&#39;s and women&#39;s swimming and diving, along with potentially up to 10 other sports, are looking to be cut as Maryland Athletics stands to lose $4.7 million this year.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;Certainly it&#39;s a sad day for swimming,&quot; College Swimming Coaches Association executive director Bob Groseth told the <i>Post<\/i>. &quot;But the prospect of six or seven or eight more teams being cut \u2014 it&#39;s a sad day for athletics.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>The <i>Post<\/i> also reports that while Maryland Athletics is looking to be in the negative by nearly $5 million this year, projections indicate that this loss could &quot;more than triple, reaching $17.6 million, within the next five years unless spending is drastically cut.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>No official decision has been made, as Maryland President Wallace Loh is not expected to make a final decision until Dec. 31, but Anderson met with the men&#39;s and women&#39;s swimming and diving programs to let them know that their sports would be recommended to be cut at the end of the season.<\/p>\n<p>With the early signing date for recruiting beginning today, Maryland has elected not to send out National Letters of Intent in many of its sports.
