﻿{"id":286567,"date":"2017-12-01T14:50:12","date_gmt":"2017-12-01T21:50:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=286567"},"modified":"2017-12-01T18:14:37","modified_gmt":"2017-12-02T01:14:37","slug":"melanie-margalis-double-gold-kelsi-worrell-49-100-fly-headline-friday-night-of-att-winter-nationals","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/melanie-margalis-double-gold-kelsi-worrell-49-100-fly-headline-friday-night-of-att-winter-nationals\/","title":{"rendered":"Melanie Margalis&#8217; Double Gold, Kelsi Worrell&#8217;s 49 100 Fly Headline Friday Night of AT&#038;T Nationals"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The third night of competition from the 2017 AT&amp;T Winter Nationals from Columbus, Ohio\u00a0featured a plethora of fast swims on Friday night.\u00a0<strong>Melanie Margalis\u00a0<\/strong>was the star on the night winning two events.\u00a0<strong>Kelsi Worrell\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0<strong>Nic Fink\u00a0<\/strong>swam pretty fast times tonight as well as Worrell swam the third fastest 100 fly ever and Fink moved to fourth all-time in the 100 breast with their wins tonight.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Mallory Comerford<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Chase Kalisz<\/strong> and\u00a0<strong>Ryan Murphy\u00a0<\/strong>also had routine wins on the third night of Nationals in Columbus.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Tonight&#8217;s events:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>400 IM<\/li>\n<li>100 Fly<\/li>\n<li>200 Free<\/li>\n<li>100 Breast<\/li>\n<li>100 Back<\/li>\n<li>200 Free Relay<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Women&#8217;s 400 IM<\/h3>\n<p>25-year-old Georgia post-grad swimmer\u00a0<strong>Melanie Margalis\u00a0<\/strong>won her second event of the weekend with a 4:00.59 to just miss the four-minute barrier in the event. Margalis remains as the ninth fastest performer all-time in the event as her 3:59.85 from 2014 SEC&#8217;s remains in that spot as her best time. Margalis picked up a personal best in the 200 IM last night.<\/p>\n<p>Margalis has been a fixture for the national team in the 200 IM the last couple years but has disappeared from the 400 IM since her collegiate days at Georgia finished in 2014. With the impending retirement of\u00a0<strong>Elizabeth Beisel\u00a0<\/strong>and the lack of a true star like\u00a0<strong>Maya DiRado<\/strong>, the United States is desperately looking for a 400 IMer to make some noise internationally in the event. Margalis may not be the long time answer, but she can provide experience and leadership for the time being in the event if she decides to stick to it as we move into the gap year and the 2018 Pan Pacs.<\/p>\n<p>Margalis again was even with the field at the halfway point, but used her breaststroke to pull again from the field just like she did last night. But he won his second title of the weekend regardless of that fact with a win on Friday night in the 400 IM at the AT&amp;T Winter Nationals in Columbus, Ohio. Kalisz has been one of the most dominating swimmers in this event since he won the NCAA title as a freshman in 2013. Worrell is also the only woman ever under 50 seconds in the 100 fly.<\/p>\n<p>Worrell won with a meet record, breaking\u00a0<strong>Rachel Komisarz<\/strong>&#8216;s 50.10 from the 2007 Winter Nationals. Worrell won ahead of Louisville teammate\u00a0<strong>Mallory Comerford\u00a0<\/strong>(50.92) who swam the second fastest time in the NCAA this season, moving ahead of Stanford&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Janet Hu\u00a0<\/strong>(51.27). Prenot silenced everybody when he went out with a 45.81 for the national title in the 100 fly on Friday night in Columbus. Prenot used his underwater kicks to his advantage a la\u00a0<strong>Tom Shields\u00a0<\/strong>to win the 100 fly title in an event he doesn&#8217;t normally swim.<\/p>\n<p>Ohio State&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Michael Salazar\u00a0<\/strong>(45.98) and\u00a0<strong>Noah Lense\u00a0<\/strong>(46.17) finished second and third in their home pool at the AT&amp;T Winter Nationals. Comerford broke the meet record with a 1:41.17 to take down\u00a0<strong>Missy Franklin&#8217;s\u00a0<\/strong>1:41.40 meet record from 2013. Comerford is on a role this year after making her first World Championship team this past summer. Comerford&#8217;s time is now the fastest in the nation so far surpassing\u00a0<strong>Katie Ledecky\u00a0<\/strong>of Stanford (1:41.60).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Isabel Ivey\u00a0<\/strong>(1:43.89),\u00a0<strong>Melanie Margalis\u00a0<\/strong>(1:44.64),\u00a0<strong>Arina Openysheva\u00a0<\/strong>(1:45.59),\u00a0<strong>Sophie Cattermole\u00a0<\/strong>(1:45.85),\u00a0<strong>Ali Galyer\u00a0<\/strong>(1:45.98),\u00a0<strong>Ashley Neidigh\u00a0<\/strong>(1:46.22) and\u00a0<strong>Miranda Heckman\u00a0<\/strong>(1:46.79) also competed in the championship final.<\/p>\n<p>Comerford could seriously challenge Ledecky in the event if the latter decides to swim it. It is hard to believe Comerford would drop the 200 in favor of the 100 fly, but only time will tell what will happen. New American Record holder\u00a0<strong>Zane Grothe\u00a0<\/strong>finished in second with a 23.20 on his final 50 at 1:33.28 overall. Murphy swam fast, but he was a little off his American record of 43.49 from the 2016 NCAA&#8217;s. Murphy is in his first year as a post grad and is clearly not shaved at this meet, but he still swam well enough for the win.<\/p>\n<p>Murphy finished first ahead of his longtime training
