{"id":286424,"date":"2017-12-01T06:31:48","date_gmt":"2017-12-01T13:31:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=286424"},"modified":"2017-12-01T06:31:48","modified_gmt":"2017-12-01T13:31:48","slug":"trio-of-olympians-to-lead-australia-swims-movement","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/trio-of-olympians-to-lead-australia-swims-movement\/","title":{"rendered":"Trio of Olympians Lead &#8220;Australia Swims&#8221; Movement"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With the iconic Sydney Harbour as backdrop, Swimming Australia CEO\u00a0<strong>Mark Anderson<\/strong>, joined by Optus Managing Director for Marketing and Product,\u00a0<strong>Ben White<\/strong>, Optus Ambassador and Australia\u2019s greatest Olympian\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?s=ian+thorpe\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Ian Thorpe<\/strong><\/a>, four-time Olympian\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?s=leisel+jones\" target=\"_blank\">Leisel Jones<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>and World Champion and dual Olympian\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?s=bronte+campbell\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Bronte Campbell<\/strong><\/a>, this morning announced the official launch of\u00a0<strong>Australia Swims<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">From\u00a0<span data-term=\"goog_1481879445\">January 20-28<\/span>\u00a0Swimming Australia, together with Optus, are excited to bring to life a nine-day celebration of the country\u2019s love of swimming and water,\u00a0AustraliaSwims,<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>with opportunities for everyone across the country to get involved \u2013 from swimming in their backyard pool or local beach, challenging themselves in an event or getting off the beaten track to explore a hidden swimming hole or river.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The launch coincided with the first day of Summer and saw peak hour in Sydney CBD transformed as a group of everyday Australians ditched their usual work attire in favour of their swimwear for the morning commute to highlight Australia\u2019s swimming culture.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Swimming Australia President\u00a0<strong>John Bertrand AO<\/strong>\u00a0said Australia Swims aims to re-energise and capture Australia\u2019s passion for swimming and the water.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cSummer in Australia is synonymous with swimming, it is a favourite pastime across the country with so many personal memories and moments centred at the beach or the pool. Together with Optus, we want to encourage all Australians to come together this January and go for a swim and celebrate a quintessential part of the Australian way of life.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAt\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/australiaswims.com.au\/\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?hl=en&amp;q=http:\/\/australiaswims.com.au&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1512220514880000&amp;usg=AFQjCNFouFb2duU5XTC4A2AkG4-Gy9m4wA\">australiaswims.com.au<\/a>\u00a0we have brought together a vast array of swimming experiences, everything from FREE DJ pool parties to challenging open water swims. Experiences that are suitable for all ages and all swimming abilities, right across the country.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThis of course would not be possible without the support of Optus who recognise the importance of swimming to our Country and that swimming is in our DNA; part of what makes us Australian,\u201d Bertrand said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Optus Managing Director of Marketing and Product,\u00a0Ben White\u00a0said, \u201cTogether with Swimming Australia, Optus has made a commitment to work to increase participation in swimming &#8211; for its wide range of benefits including health and fitness, water safety, community and above all fun.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe want to create swimming experiences that make people feel connected, excited and more alive &#8211;\u00a0and that is what Australia Swims is all about,\u201d Mr White said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Optus Ambassador and one of Australia\u2019s most iconic swimmers,\u00a0Ian Thorpe\u00a0said everyone\u2019s swimming journey is unique but it is something that also brings us together.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThroughout my swimming career I worked incredibly hard to reach the elite level however, I also ensured I had fun along the way. Swimming remains a huge part of my life and I really enjoy working with Optus and Swimming Australia to share my knowledge and experience with people of all ages,\u201d Mr Thorpe said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAustralia Swims is a great movement to bring the country together, encouraging the next generation to have fun and be safe around the water and I really hope a lot of Australians will take part.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Current Australian Dolphin\u00a0Bronte Campbell\u00a0said, \u201cI started out swimming for fun, living in South Africa, exploring water holes and lakes, and then once I moved to Australia water was everywhere so my parents enrolled Cate and I in swimming lessons.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cNow, although I take my swimming more seriously, I still have so much fun racing to compete on the world stage.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cNext year is going to be such a big year for the sport of swimming and Australia Swims is such a great way to kick things off and get everyone involved in the sport before cheering us on at the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games in April.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Four-time Olympian\u00a0Leisel Jones\u00a0said, \u201cWhen I was growing up being around water brought so much joy to my life and it\u2019s so important we encourage everyone to give swimming a go, not just at the elite level, but for fun &#8211; who knows one day they might end up representing the Country!\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI\u2019ll be at the Optus Swims Sydney Harbour here on\u00a0<span data-term=\"goog_1481879446\">January 20<\/span>\u00a0and I can\u2019t wait to see the event bring people from all walks of life together, connected through our love of the water.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Swimming Australia CEO\u00a0Mark Anderson\u00a0added that, \u201cAs of December 1,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/australiaswims.com.au\/\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?hl=en&amp;q=http:\/\/Australiaswims.com.au&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1512220514880000&amp;usg=AFQjCNHDg9dyr3nDN1RzaYc6kj197xvEYQ\">Australiaswims.com.au<\/a>\u00a0already features over 500 swimming experiences, from an open water swim at Kingston Beach Tasmania, to one of Australia\u2019s northern-most pools; Nightcliff in Darwin.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAustralia Swims is uniting the swimming industry, from local swimming clubs, to community pools, to privately run open water events, surf lifesaving Australia and other aquatic sports like triathlon and water polo.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAustralia Swims is about connecting everyone from the grass roots to the green and gold and everyone in between, there is truly something for everybody.\u201d Anderson said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With safety in and around water a key theme for Australia Swims we have enlisted the support of Surf Life Saving Australia, to provide a guide to Australia\u2019s patrolled beaches on our website.
