{"id":286234,"date":"2017-11-30T06:03:09","date_gmt":"2017-11-30T13:03:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=286234"},"modified":"2017-11-30T06:03:09","modified_gmt":"2017-11-30T13:03:09","slug":"katie-ledecky-named-female-olympic-athlete-of-the-year-by-usoc","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/katie-ledecky-named-female-olympic-athlete-of-the-year-by-usoc\/","title":{"rendered":"Katie Ledecky named Female Olympic Athlete of the Year by USOC"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Five-time Olympic champion <strong>Katie Ledecky<\/strong> (Bethesda, Md.\/Stanford Swimming) was honored <span data-term=\"goog_1405346767\">Wednesday<\/span> by the United States Olympic Committee as the winner of the Female Olympic Athlete of the Year at the 2017 Team USA Awards, Best of the Year.<\/p>\n<p>Ledecky\u2019s honor was one of eight awards recognizing the outstanding achievements of Team USA athletes, teams and coaches presented during a live recording of the Team USA Awards, Best of the Year, ceremony held at UCLA\u2019s Royce Hall in Los Angeles. The awards show \u2013 which featured singer, actor <strong>Mark McGrath<\/strong> as host \u2013 will be televised from <span data-term=\"goog_1405346768\">5-6 p.m. ET<\/span> <span data-term=\"goog_1405346769\">Dec. 23<\/span> on NBC.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am very honored and grateful to receive this recognition from the U.S. Olympic Committee and also wish to thank USA Swimming and all of the fans who supported Team USA throughout the year,\u201d Ledecky said. \u201cThanks also to my coaches and teammates &#8212; all of whom make it such a privilege to compete for Team USA and Stanford.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>At last summer\u2019s FINA World Championships, Ledecky continued her unprecedented run of international success in Budapest by winning six medals \u2013 five gold \u2013 and claiming her third straight world titles in the 400-, 800- and 1500-meter freestyle. Her 3:58.34 effort in the 400m free was a meet record and ranks as the second-fastest time in history. Ledecky added gold in the 400m and 800m free relays, as well as a second straight FINA World Championships medal (silver) in the 200m free. She owns a women\u2019s record 14 career gold medals in FINA World Championships action, including 10 individual world titles \u2013 more than any other woman.<\/p>\n<p>Ledecky earns the USOC\u2019s top annual female honor for the third time overall and second consecutive year. She also was recognized with the 2012-13 and 2016 award and becomes Team USA\u2019s first three-time Female Olympic Athlete of the Year honoree. Ledecky joins <strong>Jackie Joyner-Kersee<\/strong> and <strong>Lindsey Vonn<\/strong> as the only women to earn the award in consecutive years.<\/p>\n<p>The six athlete and team award winners were determined by online fan voting at <a href=\"https:\/\/linkprotect.cudasvc.com\/url?a=http:\/\/www.teamusa.org\/awards&amp;c=E,1,g4nlr3Lyb5DU8SAayp47QzdwAa7YkXMpUAXBaOpFA4GIoIxYEChphayvmsvKgSFHstYMf-0JEaJUYfY8iinmCpZ2h4dnnQhyvj2AaJjv&amp;typo=1\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?hl=en&amp;q=https:\/\/linkprotect.cudasvc.com\/url?a%3Dhttp:\/\/www.teamusa.org\/awards%26c%3DE,1,g4nlr3Lyb5DU8SAayp47QzdwAa7YkXMpUAXBaOpFA4GIoIxYEChphayvmsvKgSFHstYMf-0JEaJUYfY8iinmCpZ2h4dnnQhyvj2AaJjv%26typo%3D1&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1512133112022000&amp;usg=AFQjCNHCIctcfPBdvaGDbgaqLIDeXuaLlg\">TeamUSA.org\/Awards<\/a>, where more than 260,800 fan votes determined 50 percent of the final tally. Members of the Olympic and Paralympic family \u2013 including an esteemed panel of Olympic and Paralympic journalists \u2013 accounted for the other 50 percent. For coaching awards, National Governing Bodies selected their nominees as part of the USOC\u2019s annual Coach of the Year Recognition Program, and the winners were determined by a USOC selection panel of coaching and sport performance professionals.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this month, Ledecky earned her fifth consecutive Female Athlete of the Year honor at the USA Swimming Golden Goggle Awards.
