NIAGARA, New York, November 5. JUNIOR Chelsea Krisanda and freshman Katie Adams each won a pair of events to lead the University of Vermont swimming and diving team to a 165-123 victory on the road against Niagara on Saturday afternoon. With the win the Catamounts improve to 5-0 for the first time in school history.<\/p>\n
Vermont won the first seven events of the meet and took the top two spots in eight different events. Krisanda won the 200 butterfly (2:10.31) and 200 backstroke (2:11.43), while Adams took first in the 50 (25.00) and 500 (5:15.92) freestyle events.<\/p>\n
The Catamounts broke two freshmen relay records on the day as the 200 medley team made up of Ilsa Feierabend, Laura Stephens, Ashley Mitson and Adams took first in a time of 1:51.25. The freshmen quartet of Emily Green, Feierabend, Stephens and Adams broke the 200 freestyle relay mark with a time of 1:41.38.<\/p>\n
Stephens led a 1-2-3 finish in the 100 breaststroke, winning the event in a time of 1:07.06), while sophomore Taylor Slone won the 1,000 freestyle (10:55.47). Also earning first place finishes for the Catamounts were sophomore Claudia Etherington in the 100 backstroke (58.63), junior Kailey Gardner in the 200 breaststroke (2:27.77), senior Avery Pittman in the 200 freestyle (1:56.47) and senior Lauren Colby in the three-meter dive (228.82).<\/p>\n
"It is great to be 5-0 to start the year. However we have a long week of preparation ahead of us to get ready for Maine," said Vermont head coach Gerry Cournoyer.<\/p>\n
Vermont returns to action next Saturday when it hosts America East rival Maine starting at 12 p.m.<\/p>\n
