PHOENIX, Arizona, November 2. THE FINA technical committee has made the recommendation that mixed relays be added to the world championship schedule. <\/p>\n
For those not in the know, a mixed relay consists of two men and two women and is very popular in Masters swimming. The FINA committee met during the recent world championships in Shanghai and made the recommendation based on the success of the mixed relays at the Youth Olympic Games last year. The mixed relays would likely be a 400 free and 400 medley relay and would mark the first time these events have been contested at a major international competition. In 2007, the Duel in the Pool between the United States and Australia featured a mixed 400 free relay, in which Libby Lenton broke the world record in the 100 free on her leadoff leg. The time of 52.99 was not ratified because the mixed relay was not an internationally sanctioned event. The issue of setting records on leadoff legs is one of the many questions FINA will have to consider when they take up the issue at a future meeting.<\/p>\n
The University of Florida has been racing a lot in the past few weeks, and they will be stepping up again tonight in Gainesville for an in-state showdown with Florida State. Freshman Matt Elliott has been a very strong addition to the Gators squad, posting some fast times in the breaststroke and IM events in every meet so far. On the women’s side, Teresa Crippen and Elizabeth Beisel will likely swim multiple events tonight and possibly win them all, with Jamime Bohunicky helping out in the freestyle events. Florida State will be tough, with the women hoping to extend their unbeaten streak and the men coming off a tough loss to Virginia Tech.<\/p>\n
