Despite the inclusion of the <strong>University of the Pacific<\/strong> as the first-ever attendee from the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gccwaterpolo.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Golden Coast Conference<\/a> and <strong>George Washington<\/strong> as a first-time participant in postseason play, this year&#8217;s NCAA bracket is eerily similar to 2016, including the continued absence of Stanford.<\/p>\n<p>A <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pacifictigers.com\/sports\/m-wpolo\/2017-18\/releases\/20171119x6gtcp\" target=\"_blank\">9-5 win<\/a> yesterday over <strong>University of California at Irvine<\/strong> gave Pacific the Golden Coast Conference title and the GCC\u2019s first-ever NCAA automatic berth. The Aggies beat <strong>University of California San Diego<\/strong> by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ucdavisaggies.com\/sports\/m-wpolo\/recaps\/111917aaa.html\" target=\"_blank\">9-6<\/a> to capture a second-straight <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thewwpa.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Western Water Polo Association<\/a> title and with it the WWPA\u2019s automatic bid.<\/p>\n<p>The same Pac-12 teams, representing the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mpsports.org\/sports\/m-wpolo\/mpsf-m-wpolo-body.html\" target=\"_blank\">Mountain Pacific Sports Federation<\/a> continued their dominance of NCAAs, capturing three berths. Despite a <a href=\"http:\/\/usctrojans.com\/news\/2017\/11\/19\/mens-water-polo-ncaa-host-usc-secures-13th-straight-trip-to-the-tourney.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">7-5 loss<\/a> to <strong>USC<\/strong> yesterday in the MPSF tournament final, <strong>UCLA<\/strong> (19-4) was a surprising top tournament seed, advancing the Bruins straight into the Final Four. UCLA gets to rest until Saturday, December 3, when they will face either Pacific, UC-Davis or Pomona Pitzer.<\/p>\n<p>Despite winning a second-straight MPSF title, the Trojans (25-3)\u2014 seeking a 13th straight NCAA finals appearance\u2014were relegated to an at-large bid. On November 30 they will play whomever advances from the East. Trailing by four goals at halftime, <strong>Harvard<\/strong> (23-7) captured a second-straight <a href=\"https:\/\/collegiatewaterpolo.org\/varsity\/schedules\/mensvarsity\/2017mennortheastwpschedule\/\" target=\"_blank\">Northeast Water Polo Conference<\/a> automatic bid, roaring back for a stunning <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gocrimson.com\/sports\/mwaterpolo\/2017-18\/releases\/20171119st7l9l\" target=\"_blank\">11-10 sudden-death overtime decision<\/a> over <strong>Princeton<\/strong>. The Crimson will host a play-in match on Saturday against <strong>George Washington<\/strong> (17-10), a first-time NCAA participant by virtue of an <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gwsports.com\/sports\/c-wpolo\/recaps\/111917aaa.html\" target=\"_blank\">8-5 win<\/a> over <strong>Wagner<\/strong>. The Colonials captured the <a href=\"https:\/\/collegiatewaterpolo.org\/varsity\/schedules\/mensvarsity\/2017menmidatlanticwpeastschedule\/\" target=\"_blank\">Mid-Atlantic Water Polo Conference\u2019s<\/a> automatic berth, besting a Seahawk seven that had knocked out top MAWPC seed <strong>Bucknell<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The other at-large berth went to the <strong>University of California<\/strong> (20-3), who last year captured the NCAA championship for a record 14th time. The Golden Bears were awarded the tournament\u2019s second seed\u2014advancing them directly to the Final Four\u2014and will likely face MPSF rival USC on December 1.<\/p>\n<p>Left out in the cold for the third year in a row is <strong>Stanford <\/strong>(19-5). It\u2019s a devastating turn of events for a program that came into last weekend as both the nation\u2019s top-ranked squad and the #1 seed in the MPSF Tournament. On Friday USC snapped the Cardinal\u2019s 12-match winning streak, dealing them a 10-5 loss in their own pool.<\/p>\n<p>Yesterday, Stanford raced out to a three-goal first period lead, and held a one-goal lead with 11 seconds remaining when Cal\u2019s <strong>Luca Cupido<\/strong> tied the match with a long range blast.
