THE European women All-Stars and the USA men both scored substantial victories in the bronze medal round of the Goodwill Games today. The European women dumped the World All-star team 92-57, while the US men dismissed the Euro men 87-62.

Women: Europe 92, World 57
The Europeans won 13 of 17 events today, two in Goodwill Games record time, as the European women took the bronze medal.

Holland's Inky De Bruijn accounted for both Games marks, winning the 50 free in 24.99 and led off the free relay in 55.02.

Romania's Beatrice Coada-Caslaru was a double winner, taking the 200 breast in 2:28.26, fastest time of these Games, and beating Olympic champion Yana Klochkova for the second time in a row in the 200 IM, touching in 2:14.08.

Martina Moravcova won the 100 fly in 58.58, just off the Games record 58.28 she established two days ago.

Japan's Maki Mita won the 200 fly for the World team in 2:10.13, while Mai Nakamura won the 100 back in 1:01.90.

Men: USA 87, Europe 62
Though the US men won by what appears to be a comfortable 25-poiny margin, this was a hard-fought meet, with the outmanned Euros holding the lead through the first nine of the meet's 17 events. Only toward the end did the USA's 19-13 advantage in available swimmers take its toll.

Europe began the meet with an upset win in the medley relay, clocking 3:39.86, to take a 7-0 lead.

Tom Wilkens gave the US a win in the 400 IM (4:18.88) over Israel's Miki Halika, as Eric Donnelly took third, bringing the score to 10-6.

But the Euros matched thatr 1-3 finish with one of their own in the 200 free, with Holland's Pieter bvan den Hoogenband winning in 1:48.11 over Chad Carvin.
Score: Euros 16, USA-9.

Russia's Vladislav Aminov added a point to that lead, 21-13, with a surprise win in the 100 back (55.71) as Jayme Cramer and Dan Westcott took the next two spots.

The European lead extended to 15 points when Holland's Joris Keizer and Russia's Igor Marchenko one-two'ed the 50 fly. With the score standing at 29-14, the US badly needed a lift.

That lift came in the form of a one-two American finish in the 50 free, with Gary Hall Jr. swimming 22.27 — the Games' fastest 50 — and Jason Lezak downing Poland's Bart Kizierowski for second. Europe's lead now stood at 30-22.

But the determined Euros were far from through. Russia's Dmitri Komornikov took the 100 breast (1:02.64) to bring the score to 35-26.

Tom Malchow swam his fourth straight 1:55 in the 200 fly, this time clocking 1:55.20 to lower his own Games record. Eric Donnelly picked up the bronze, as the US narrowed the Euros' lead to 38-32.

The turning point came in the next event, the 100 free, in which Scott Tucker won in a very slow 51.64, followed by Jason Lezak's 53.24. The US now had the lead 40-39. They would never look back.

The USA's Chris DeJong just eked out a win in the 200 back over Israel's Yoav gat, 2:02.21 to 2:02.26, with Luke Wagner taking third. Score: USA 46, Europe 42.

Komornikov looked to add a second breaststroke win in the 200 meters — his best event — but Tom Wilkens wasn't having any of that. The gutsy Wilkens established a one-second lead at the 50. By the 150, the margin was almost three-and-a-half seconds. The Russian had plenty left, out-splitting Wilkens 32.73 to 35.55, but Wilkens glided in for the win in 2:15.26, and Jeff Hackler took third. The score now stood at 52-45. The Euros, after losing two close contests, had run out of soldiers anmd gasped their last.

Chad Carvin prepared the continent's coffin with a 3:52.01 swim in the 400 free and Fran Crippen supplied a nail or two with his third place finish. It was now
58-46.

But the stubbourn conttinentals would not cry "uncle." Lars Frolander, making a rare appearance at these Games, and Igor Marchenko, went one-two in the 100 fly, and the US lead narrowed to 59-54.

But that was it for the Euros. Jayme Cramer won the 50 back (25.89), edging Kizierowski; Jarrod Marrs took the 50 breast (28.78); Tom Wilkens and Joey Montague swept the 200 IM; and the USA mopped up with a 3:19.09
win in the free relay.

RESULTS

WOMEN'S BRONZE MEDAL GAME
1 EUR 92
2 WLD 57

4×100 Medley Relay
1 EUR 1 –
