GAMBIER, Ohio, October 22. THE Kenyon College women's swimming and diving team kicked off the new season Saturday by winning six of ten events and taking the title in the inaugural Kenyon Relays. The Ladies scored a total of 120 points and held off second-place Denison University, which scored 106 points.
\nThe bulk of Kenyon's point total naturally came from the eight swimming events, but points accrued in the two diving events proved to be equally important.<\/p>\n
Denison won the first relay event of the day, but Kenyon got going with a win in the 200-yard backstroke relay. The Ladies team of Celia Oberholzer (Wyoming, OH\/Wyoming), Anna Connolly (Wayne, PA\/Conestoga), Kellyn Caldwell (Gambier, OH\/Mt. Vernon), and Rachel Flinn (Nashua, NH\/Peddie) clocked in at 1:45.57 to take the victory. Connolly and Caldwell swam in the next relay, too. They paired with Alisa Vereshchagin (Solon, OH\/Solon) and Nikki Kett (Middlebury, CT\/The Hopkins School) to post a winning time of 2:04.02 in the 200-yard breaststroke relay.<\/p>\n
Connolly and Caldwell never let up throughout the competition. Connolly, a junior, wound up swimming on five of Kenyon's six winning relay teams, while Caldwell contributed to all six wins. The other four Ladies' wins came in the 400-yard individual medley relay (4:01.08), the 1,500-yard freestyle relay (15:30.57), the 500-yard crescendo relay (4:36.10), and the 200-yard freestyle relay (1:37.41).<\/p>\n
While Connolly and Caldwell stole the spotlight, Vereshchagin and Kett both swam with two winning relay teams. Hannah Saiz (Plattsburgh, NY\/Plattsburgh Senior) and Meghan Quinn (Lighthouse Point, FL\/Pine Crest) also notched two wins apiece.<\/p>\n
In diving competition, which was held at Denison University, the Ladies got just want they needed. Sophomore Samantha Rapp (Hummelstown, PA\/Hershey) nailed down third-place finishes in both the one-meter and two-meter competitions. Those finishes were worth a combined 16 points, two more than the Ladies' final margin of victory.<\/p>\n
In those final team standings, Wittenberg University ended up in third place with 74 points and the College of Wooster was fourth with 52 points. Allegheny College (46 points) and Ohio Wesleyan University (20 points) rounded things out.<\/p>\n
