DALLAS, Texas, October 22. THE University of Texas Women’s Swimming & Diving team captured the title at the SMU Classic with a strong second day’s performance at the SMU Perkins Natatorium in Dallas.<\/p>\n
The Longhorns entered the day with a 10-point lead over Florida and were able to double that advantage through the second half of the events as they finished with a meet-high 350 points.<\/p>\n
“I am really happy with how the team came back today,” said head coach Kim Brackin. “We raced really tough across the board. Our record-breaking medley certainly created strong momentum.” <\/p>\n
Brackin was impressed with how Karlee Bispo swam on Saturday. Bispo followed her strong performance on Friday with the fastest time in the 100-yard freestyle (49.45) as well as swimming on the winning 800 freestyle and 200 medley relay teams. She also finished second in the 200-yard individual medley (2:01.63).<\/p>\n
Texas started the day with victories in both the 800 freestyle and 200 medley relays. Bispo, Leah Gingrich, Lily Moldenhauer and Katie Riefenstahl combined for a 7:16.74 in the 800 freestyle relay. In the 200 medley, Moldenhauer, Laura Sogar, Kelsey Amundsen and Bispo teamed up for a time of 1:42.32.<\/p>\n
Sogar came through with a win in the 200-yard breaststroke for the Longhorns with a time of 2:13.10. Gingrich was also a victor, swimming the fastest in the 200-yard butterfly (1:59.60).<\/p>\n
Other notables from Saturday included Gingrich swimming the second fastest time in the 500-yard freestyle (4:47.85) with Kaitlin Pawlowicz clocking the next fastest by winning her heat (4:49.53). Sogar had the third fastest time behind Bispo in the 200-yard individual medley (2:03.57), winning her heat as well.<\/p>\n
“It was a great team effort and this group of nine definitely enjoyed the experience,” said Brackin. “We look forward to getting the entire group back together though as we head up to Michigan.”<\/p>\n
Next up for Texas will be a trip to Ann Arbor, Mich. for duals against Indiana and Michigan next Friday, Oct. 28 beginning at 11 a.m.<\/p>\n
