WITH just three more days left in the pool at the Pan American Games, the U.S. women had a strong night with five medals include a pair of top-two sweeps.<\/p>\n<p>Team USA finished the evening with 32 medals in the pool, including 14 golds, 14 silvers and four bronzes.  Brazil stood second with 17 medals (7 gold, 5 silver, 5 bronze), while Cayman Islands, thanks to the Fraser brothers, is third with three medals, one of each color.<\/p>\n<p><b>Women&#39;s 100 free<\/b><br \/>\nThe U.S. cruised to a top-two sweep in the event.  Amanda Kendall captured the gold medal with a 54.75, just half-a-second back of Amanda Weir&#39;s Games record of 54.46 from 2003. Teammate Erika Erndl raced to silver in 55.04. Venezuela&#39;s Arlene Semeco picked up bronze in a time of 55.43.<\/p>\n<p>Puerto Rico&#39;s Vanessa Garcia (55.55), Canada&#39;s Jennifer Beckberger (55.68), Mexico&#39;s Liliana Ibanez (55.74), Brazil&#39;s Tatiana Barbosa (56.36) and Argentina&#39;s Nadia Colovini (56.53) turned in fourth through eighth-place finishes in the event.<\/p>\n<p><b>Men&#39;s 200 IM<\/b><br \/>\nBrazil&#39;s Thiago Pereira, who ranks third in the world this year with a 1:57.35 from Brazil in May, clocked a 1:58.07 to capture the gold medal in the event.  USA&#39;s Conor Dwyer placed a close second in 1:58.64 to move to ninth in the world rankings, while Brazil&#39;s Henrique Rodrigues took third in 2:03.41.<\/p>\n<p>Mexico&#39;s Ezequiel Trujillo (2:04.36), Canada&#39;s Liam Dias (2:05.06), Ecuador&#39;s Esteban Enderica (2:05.10), Mexico&#39;s Miguel Robles (2:06.89) and USA&#39;s William Harris (2:08.25) rounded out the championship heat.<\/p>\n<p><b>Women&#39;s 800 free<\/b><br \/>\nChile&#39;s Kristel Kobrich dominated the distance freestyle event with an 8:34.71, while USA&#39;s Ashley Twichell took second in 8:38.38.  Venezuela&#39;s Andreina Pinto rounded out the podium in 8:44.55.<\/p>\n<p>Mexico&#39;s Patricia Castaneda (8:49.07), Ecuador&#39;s Samantha Arevalo (8:51.31), Mexico&#39;s Susana Escobar (8:52.51), El Salvador&#39;s Alexia Benitez (9:03.53) and Venezuela&#39;s Yanel Pinto (9:07.73) also swam in the finale.<\/p>\n<p><b>Women&#39;s 200 fly<\/b><br \/>\nThe United States picked up another 1-2 finish from its women as Kim Vandenberg topped the event in 2:10.54, and Lyndsay De Paul captured silver in 2:12.34.  Mexico&#39;s Rita Medrana earned bronze in 2:12.43.<\/p>\n<p>Brazil&#39;s Joanna Maranhao (2:13.00), Canada&#39;s Erin Miller (2:16.10), Canada&#39;s Brenna MacLean (2:16.13), Venezuela&#39;s Eliana Barrios (2:18.19) and Mexico&#39;s Prisciliana Escobar (2:20.16) wrapped up the championship field.<\/p>\n<p><b>Men&#39;s 800 free relay<\/b><br \/>\nTeam USA&#39;s Conor Dwyer, Scot Robison, Charlie Houchin and Matt Patton easily claimed the relay title with a 7:15.07 for the win. Brazil&#39;s Andre Schultz, Nicolas Oliveira, Leonardo De Deus and Thiago Pereira finished second in 7:21.96, while Venezuela&#39;s Daniele Tirabassi, Cristian Quintero, Crox Acuna and Marcos Lavado picked up bronze in 7:23.41.<\/p>\n<p>Argentina (7:36.37), Mexico (7:37.77), Canada (7:50.85), Paraguay (7:54.78) and Peru (8:17.87) made up the rest of the relay field.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>GUADALAJARA, Mexico, October 19.
