At first glance, <strong>Joseph Agabs<\/strong> and <strong>Oscar Nomura<\/strong>\u2014from opposite sides of the country\u2014could not appear more different if they tried. Agabs, whose father immigrated from Azerbaijan, is a graduate of Brooklyn Technical High School who from age 11 played for <a href=\"http:\/\/www.waterpoloplanet.com\/HTML_Doru_pages\/dr25_water_polo_articles.html\" target=\"_blank\">Y Pro<\/a>, a Sheepshead Bay-base age group club. Agabs and Nomura signify the growth of men\u2019s water polo in the Northeast and a match last Wednesday night between <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/2017-mens-water-polo-preview-mid-atlantic-water-polo-conference\/\" target=\"_blank\">Mid-Atlantic Water Polo Conference <\/a>rivals\u2014Fordham for Agabs and Wagner for Nomura\u2014resulted in a highly <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wagnerathletics.com\/news\/2017\/11\/1\/mens-water-polo-edges-fordham-15-14-in-thrilling-overtime-victory.aspx?path=mpolo\" target=\"_blank\">entertaining contest<\/a> that the host Seahawks pulled out 15-14 in sudden death overtime.<\/p>\n<p>The success enjoyed by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wagnerathletics.com\/index.aspx?path=mpolo&amp;\" target=\"_blank\">Wagner<\/a> (11-15; 4-4 MAWPC), Bronx-based <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fordhamsports.com\/index.aspx?path=mwpolo\" target=\"_blank\">Fordham<\/a> (14-8; 4-2 MAWPC) and # 15 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sfcathletics.com\/index.aspx?path=mwater\" target=\"_blank\">St. Francis Brooklyn <\/a>(13-9; 8-1 Northeast Water Polo Conference) indicate a resurgence in New York City water polo, a development that\u2019s good for the sport locally as well as nationally, where storylines often focus on the dominance of California-based programs.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Watching Anxiously From the Stands<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>As his son navigated the shallow\/deep configuration of the Spiro Center\u2019s pool, <strong>Roman Agabs<\/strong>\u2014a one-time polo player who helped start Y Pro\u2014observed carefully, as he has for the majority of Joseph\u2019s matches the past decade. Less than two minutes in the younger Agabs scored for the Rams with a shot that beat Seahawk goalie <strong>Cameron Woldt<\/strong>. Photo Courtesy: M.Randazzo<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m happy he\u2019s playing for Fordham,\u201d said Roman, who with wife Irina and daughter Ruth was close enough to shout instructions to his son. \u201cIt\u2019s a very good team; almost like a family.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Fordham has experienced a break-out season in 2017. Nationally ranked earlier in the season for the first time in three decades, the Rams are powered by a trio of exceptional performers. <strong>Massimiliano Mirarchi <\/strong>(74 goals), a graduate student from Italy who shredded the Wagner defense for 6 goals before being rolled from the game in the fourth period, is one of the country\u2019s more prolific goal scorers. Sophomore <strong>Jake Miller-Tolt <\/strong>(48), who contributed a hat trick Wednesday night, is second behind the Italian native, while the Ram defense is anchored by senior goalie <strong>Alex Jahns<\/strong> of Greenwich, who recorded 14 saves.<\/p>\n<p>That Nomura is even on this coast is a bit of a surprise; a top player in the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF), he took a chance with an untested men\u2019s program in a region that\u2019s a departure from what he knew growing up in polo-mad California. Wagner\u2019s second leading scorer last year in the men\u2019s program\u2019s first year of existence, Nomura has dropped to fifth in the latest Seahawk scoring chart due to the arrival of freshman sensations <strong>Jasmin Kolasinac<\/strong> (80 goals) and <strong>Teo Dadic <\/strong>(41).<\/p>\n<p>Visiting from California,\u00a0Nomura\u2019s mother <strong>Leslie Severson<\/strong> explained that a change of scenery was best for her son.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s a lot of competition on the West Coast to play,\u201d she explained. \u201cWe thought it\u2019d be tough for him at one of the public universities [in California]. The senior from Manly, Australia had missed a wide-open shot on a break-away in the first overtime period, rattled the cage on a shot in the second but delivered a golden goal eight seconds into sudden-death overtime<\/p>\n<p>That Wolohan\u2014who led the team is scoring in 2016\u2014is with the Seahawks is a testament to Wagner head coach <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/catching-up-with-wagner-water-polos-chris-radmonovich\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Chris Radmonovich<\/strong><\/a>, who in a little more than a year has built a competitive men&#8217;s program.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCiaran is such a big part of what we do here,\u201d Radmonovich said after the match. \u201cA great leader, a great captain\u2014he\u2019s important to everything we do.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps the ultimate thrill was enjoyed by parents who traveled both near and far to watch the East\u2019s particular version of the sport: shallow\/deep pools and heart-stopping contests between rivals.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was very exciting to watch the game tonight,\u201d Leslie Severson said. \u201cI was really happy to be here tonight when they finally turned around their losing streak and beat Fordham, the big crosstown rival.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Roman Agabs was philosophical about the Ram\u2019s loss.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cToday they lost but that\u2019s the sport,\u201d he said. \u201cIt\u2019s water polo and anything can happen.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Michael Randazzo, Swimming World Contributor STATEN ISLAND, NY.
