TEAM USA continued its medal surge in the Yingdong Natatorium today, highlighted by a one-two punch in the women's 50m fly.

The US now leads the medal tally with 11 total medals (3G, 6S, 2B) with Japan second with eight (2G, 3S, 3B).

Bethany Goodwin swam to victory in the 50m butterfly in a WUG record 27.18 seconds, to lower the mark of 27.30 she set in her semifinal. Rachel Komisarz pulled off an unusual double when she won silver in both the 50m fly and the 400m free. In the 50 fly, she clocked 27.26, also under Goodwin's former mark.

"I'm so happy to have won the race," said Goodwin.
"It's even better that Rachel and I were able to go one-two."

The next medal event of the evening, the 400m free, was won by Romania's Camelia potec in 4:11.24. Komisarz was a strong second, her 4;12.26 lowering her previous PB by four seconds. Japan's sachiko Yamada edged Russia's Nadezhda Chemezova for the bronze, 4:13.01 to 4:13.04.

Komisarz split a 1:01.84, 2:06.17, 3:10.42 to touch in 4:12.26.

Jessica Foschi finished sixth in 4:16.70 (1:01.69, 2:06.51, 3:12.56).

"I'm very happy with my performance tonight, and just overwhelmed," said Komisarz. Tonight's performance gives her three medals at the Games, one gold (800m FR) and two silver.

The men's 400m free relay was a neck-and-neck battle between the US, Great Britain and France. Heading into the final turn, Great Britain's Paul Belk led Scott Vonschoff of the US, but Vonschoff continued to close the gap. Belk stayed strong and managed to keep the surging American from the gold. The top three spots were separated by a seven-tenths margin. Great Britain posted a 3:20.18, the US was second in 3:20.58 with France right behind in 3:20.71. The time was the 26th-fastest in American history, and a personal best for the Indiana senior. Her teammate, Jennifer Crisman finished sixth in 1:03.37 (30.82).

"I knew I had the swim in me," said Woessner. "I'm so relieved to win the medal, and just so happy to have gotten my best time." After her swim, Woessner couldn't hide her excitement and was visibly pleased, if not surprised with her performance. "I think I was a little bit surprised, a little bit relieved, but very excited!"

In the women's 200m IM, Ukrainian Yana Klochkova continued her dominance of the event, setting a new WUG record of 2:14.13. Japan's Tomoko Hagiwara was second in 2:15.11. The USA's Katie Yevak put together a very strong breaststroke split, but couldn't hang on and placed sixth in the event, swimming a 2:17.62 (29.25, 1:05.25, 1:43.87).

The other final event featuring an American, was the 100m breaststroke. Tara Kirk swam a 32.54 to touch second at the half-way mark, but couldn't hang on, and was just out-touched for the bronze. Her 1:10.83 was good enough for fourth place. She went into the evening's final with the fastest semifinl time, 1:09.84.

Semifinals
In semifinal action, Kevin Clements is the top seed heading into tomorrow's finals of the 200m IM. The duo turned in a gold-silver performance yesterday in the 100m back.

Andy Haidinyak and Brendan Coyne both advanced to the 100m fly final. Coyne swam a 54.46 (25.36) to advance fourth, and Haidinyak posted a 54.74 (25.84) to qualify seventh.

Sara Platzer touched the wall in 26.43, good enough to advance her (eighth) to the finals of the 50m free tomorrow.
