EAST LANSING, Michigan, October 8. VANESSZA Balogh won three individual events and Amr el Sayed won two individual events as the Oakland men's and women's swimming and diving teams split with Michigan State and Cleveland State in the first meet of the year Saturday afternoon. The men scored 194.5 points and beat CSU who earned 137.5 points but fell to MSU by 7.5 points who scored 202. The women scored 215 points but lost to the Spartans who earned 247 but beat the Vikings with 88 points. <\/p>\n
"It was a nice format and a beautiful day to start the season swimming outside at Michigan State," said head coach Pete Hovland. "Some of the kids are not used to swimming outside, long course and meters, but we told them to go out and swim aggressively and for the most part they did that."<\/p>\n
For the men, el Sayed won the 800-meter free (8:49.14) and the 400-meter free (4:13.99). Nick Evans won the 200-meter free and was a member of the winning 400-meter free relay team with Grant Harding, Jordan Moses and Matyas Kereztes. Joe Rodgers was runner-up in the 200-meter breast (2:29.56) and the 200-meter IM (2:15.18).<\/p>\n
For the women, Balogh won the 800-meter free (9:25.13), the 400-meter free (4:35.82) and the 200-meter free (2:10.73). Sandra Czerska was Oakland's other multiple individual event winner, taking home wins in the 200-meter IM (2:28.36) and the 200-meter fly (2:25.93). Czerska was also a member of the winning 400-meter medley relay team with Alyssa Busch, Johanna Gustafsson and Alyssa Vela. Gustafsson won the 200-meter breast (2:47.10) and Vela won the 100-meter free (1:00.55) while being a part of the winning 400-meter free relay with Busch, Julieanne Stears and Bronte Stewart (4:10.89).<\/p>\n
Oakland will be in the pool again next weekend when they travel to Notre Dame, Ind. to swim in the Dennis Stark Relays on Friday starting at 5 p.m. and take on Notre Dame, Michigan and TCU on Saturday starting at 11 a.m.<\/p>\n
