At last winter&#8217;s<a href=\"http:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/trent-martinez-emily-cook-double-winners-at-oregon-6a-high-school-states\/\" target=\"_blank\"> Oregon 6A High School state championships<\/a> Mathias won the 100 fly (48.61) and the 100 back (50.48).<\/p>\n<p>Mathias does his year round swimming with Multnomah Aquatic Club. His best times are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>200 IM 1:48.79<\/li>\n<li>100 Fly 48.61<\/li>\n<li>200 Fly 1:51.95<\/li>\n<li>100 Breast 56.75<\/li>\n<li>200 Breast 2:05.39<\/li>\n<li>100 Back 50.48<\/li>\n<li>200 Back 1:51.11<\/li>\n<li>50 Free 21.16<\/li>\n<li>100 Free 47.61<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>At last year&#8217;s Big Ten Championships it took a 1:46.80 to score in the 200 IM. Mathias will join a strong IM group that will include a number of Hoosiers who scored in the event last year.\u00a0<strong>Vinicius Lanza\u00a0<\/strong>(1:41.59),\u00a0<strong>Ian Finnerty\u00a0<\/strong>(1:41.86), and\u00a0<strong>Mohamed Samy\u00a0<\/strong>(1:45.17) will all be seniors in Mathias&#8217; first year in Bloomington.<\/p>\n<p>He said of his decision,<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;I chose Indiana University because I feel it&#8217;s best fit for me.\u00a0 An excellent balance of great academics and top tier swimming.\u00a0 Go Hoosiers!\u00a0 #RedRevolution #GoIU&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>He&#8217;ll suit up alongside\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/jack-franzman-switches-verbal-commitment-from-nc-state-to-indiana-hoosiers\/\" target=\"_blank\">Jack Franzman<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/jr-national-champion-michael-brinegar-sends-verbal-commitment-to-hoosiers\/\" target=\"_blank\">Michael Brinegar<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>next fall.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>NEW COMMIT: Van Mathias, a versatile swimmer from Portland, Oregon, has verbally committed to swim for Indiana University beginning next fall.
