﻿{"id":282128,"date":"2017-10-27T22:08:26","date_gmt":"2017-10-28T05:08:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=282128"},"modified":"2017-10-27T22:08:26","modified_gmt":"2017-10-28T05:08:26","slug":"big-ten-friday-recap-iowa-men-stun-no-21-min","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/big-ten-friday-recap-iowa-men-stun-no-21-min\/","title":{"rendered":"Big Ten Friday Recap: Iowa Men Stun No. 21 Minnesota"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>By Dan D&#8217;Addona.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>There were plenty of Big Ten meets on Friday, but only one stunner.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0 Iowa men won 10 of the 16 events to knock off 21st-ranked Minnesota, 162-138, on Friday night.\u00a0 The Hawkeye women fell to No. 17 Minnesota, 190-109.<\/p>\n<p>Four Hawkeyes posted multiple victories \u2013 <strong>Kenneth Mende<\/strong> (3), <strong>Jerzy Twarowski<\/strong> (3), <strong>Jack Smith<\/strong> (2), and<strong> Joe Myhre<\/strong> (2). <strong>Daniel Swanepoel, Michael Tenney, Michal Brzus, Will Scott, Will Brenner<\/strong> and <strong>Anton Hoherz<\/strong> each posted one win.<\/p>\n<p>Hoherz&#8217;s 3-meter diving score of 383.50 ranks third all-time in school history. Smith and Twarowski posted NCAA &#8220;B&#8221; qualifying times in the 50 free (20.17) and 100 fly (48.06).<\/p>\n<p>Mende won three events &#8212; the 100 back (48.59), ranking seventh all-time in the UI record books, and the 200 back (1:46.73). Mende was also a part of the winning 200-medley relay team, touching in at 1:29.45.<\/p>\n<p>Twarowski also won three events &#8212; 100 fly (48.06 B), 200 fly (1:48.38), and was a part of the winning 200-medley relay with Myhre.<\/p>\n<p>For the Minnesota men, captain <strong>Conner McHugh<\/strong> led the team with 22 points, including first place finishes in the 100 and 200 breast. McHugh posted NCAA &#8220;B&#8221; qualifying times in both events with a 100 breast time of 54.74 and a 200 breast time of 1:57.13. Junior <strong>Brian Poon<\/strong> also added 16 points including a first place finish in the 200 IM (1:49.22).<\/p>\n<p>On the diving side Minnesota captain <strong>Alan LeBlang<\/strong>, posting a second place finish in the 3-meter (379.25), while Nick Yang placed third in the 1-meter (338.10).<\/p>\n<p>The Minnesota women won every event.<\/p>\n<p>Freshman <strong>Mackenzie Paddington<\/strong> won two events. Junior <strong>Chantal Nack<\/strong> also posted a pair of first place touches in the 200 and 500 free.<\/p>\n<p>On the diving side of things <strong>Mariam Khamis<\/strong> posted first place finishes in both the 1-meter (290.15) and the 3-meter (308.75).<\/p>\n<p>Iowa&#8217;s <strong>Hannah Burvill<\/strong> finished second in four events &#8212; 200 free (1:48.38), 100 free (50.51), 500 free (4:53.79), and the 400-free relay (3:24.83) to lead Hawkeye women.<\/p>\n<h3>\nPurdue women fall to Notre Dame<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Taite Kitchel<\/strong> and <strong>Kaersten Meitz<\/strong> both won multiple individual events for the third straight dual meet, but No. 16 Purdue women&#8217;s swimming &amp; diving came up short in the team scoring in a top-25 matchup with No. 10 Notre Dame on Friday.<\/p>\n<p>The Purdue women swept the relay events, but lost by 26 points in the team scoring after UND had at least the top two finishers in four events &#8212; 1-meter diving, the 100 butterfly and both backstroke races. Conversely, the Boilermakers finished 1-2 in only the 200 individual medley. Kitchel was victorious in the event and<strong> Emmy Rawson<\/strong> finished second.<\/p>\n<p>Meitz swept the distance freestyle events while also finishing second in the 200 free with a team season-best time and B Cut. She and Kitchel, who also won the 200 fly Friday, remain tied for the team lead with seven individual event victories this season. Both 2017 NCAA Championships qualifiers also contributed to a victorious relay.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Jinq En Phee<\/strong> (100 breast) and <strong>Samm Reese<\/strong> (3-meter diving) rounded out the Boilermakers&#8217; individual event winners.<\/p>\n<h3>Wisconsin wins on senior day<\/h3>\n<p>The Badgers celebrated their senior class before Day 1 of their dual meet vs. NC State on Friday, and two seniors shined on the first day of their final home meet.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Abby Jagdfeld<\/strong> won the 100-yard breaststroke in 1 minute, 4.33 seconds, and <strong>Marissa Berg<\/strong> claimed the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:04.33 for her first-ever dual meet win<\/p>\n<p>Berg, <strong>Maddie Martin, <\/strong>Jagdfeld<strong>, Victor Goicoechea, Anthony Lyons, Todd McCarthy<\/strong> and <strong>Ryan Stack<\/strong> were all honored prior to the opening of the two-day competition at the UW Natatorium.<\/p>\n<h3>Indiana wins three<\/h3>\n<p>The No. 1\/7-ranked Indiana University men&#8217;s and women&#8217;s swimming and diving teams earned three wins in a double-dual meet against No. 15\/12 Tennessee and No. &#8211;\/15 Kentucky on Friday afternoon at the Jones Aquatic Center in Knoxville, Tenn.<\/p>\n<p>The No. 1-ranked Hoosier men (4-0) extended the team&#8217;s dual-meet win-streak to 17-straight, beating No. 15 Tennessee, 165-135, and Kentucky, 223-84.<\/p>\n<p>The No. 7-ranked Indiana women took down No. 15 Kentucky, 157-143, but were edged by No. 12 Tennessee, 159-141. The Hoosier women move to 2-2 on the dual meet season.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Blake Pieroni<\/strong> and<strong> Vini Lanza<\/strong> led the way for the Hoosiers, with each notching three individual wins apiece. Pieroni won the 50 free (19.65), 100 free (43.07) and 200 free (1:36.75) with NCAA B cut times. His times in the 50 and 100 are the third-fastest times in the country this year.<\/p>\n<p>Lanza touched first in the 100 fly (46.90), 200 fly (1:44.18) and 200 IM (1:47.18) for Indiana with NCAA B cut marks. Lanza posted the fourth-best times in the country with his time in the 200 fly.<\/p>\n<h3>Northwestern sweeps Illinois, Rutgers<\/h3>\n<p>Senior <strong>Mary Warren<\/strong> set a pool record in the 50 free and <strong>Calypso Sheridan<\/strong> picked up four wins as the the Northwestern women&#8217;s swimming and diving program opened Big Ten competition with a pair of wins over Illinois and Rutgers in a tri-dual hosted by the Fighting Illini Friday afternoon.<\/p>\n<p>The Wildcats defeated the rival Fighting Illini, 188-110, and also picked up a win over the Scarlet Knights, 186-114, to improve to 2-2 in duals this season.<\/p>\n<p>The 400-medley relay of Sheridan and fellow first year Sophie Angus, junior Alex Grimes and senior Mary Warren set the tone for Chicago&#8217;s Big Ten Team with a win in 3:47.44.<\/p>\n<p>Sheridan continued to play a major role for the Wildcats, picking up wins in the 100 back (55.81), 200 breast (2:17.27) and 200 individual medley. The Australian set a season best in the 200 IM with a 2:02.40.<\/p>\n<h3>Ohio State sweeps Kenyon<\/h3>\n<p>Ohio State\u2019s men outscored Kenyon 189-69, while the women were victorious with a final total of 185-73.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Meg Bailey<\/strong> claimed the most wins for Ohio State with three: 200 butterfly (1:59.95), 200 backstroke (2:01.40) and the 200 individual medley (2:02.29).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Freya Rayner<\/strong> dominated the short freestyle races with golds in the 50 and 100-yard races. The freshman had an impressive debut in American waters with times of 22.87 and 50.56, respectively.<\/p>\n<p>As the women did, the men swept all individual races: <strong>Mark Belanger<\/strong> (100 backstroke), <strong>Jack Barone<\/strong> (100 breaststroke), <strong>Henrique Painhas<\/strong> (200 butterfly), <strong>Michael Lynch<\/strong> (50 freestyle), <strong>Nathan Christian<\/strong> (100 freestyle), <strong>Brad Shannon<\/strong> (200 backstroke), and M<strong>ichael Salaza<\/strong>r (100 butterfly).<\/p>\n<h3>MSU falls in Pittsburgh<\/h3>\n<p>Michigan State swimming and diving dropped contests in Pittsburgh on Friday night. The women fell to the host Panthers 90-210, Miami (Fla.) 146-152, and James Madison University 149-151. The men fell to Pittsburgh 105-185.<\/p>\n<p>Senior <strong>Racheal Bukowski<\/strong> picked up two first-place finishes. She clocked in at 23.41 in the 50 freestyle, and 50.55 in the 100 freestyle.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Michael Schwers<\/strong> won the 100 butterfly with a season-best 49.66.
