PHOENIX, Arizona, October 5. THE organizers of the Pan-American Games have faced a little controversy in creating a cap for the number of swimmers allowed to compete next week. <\/p>\n
Organizers initially wanted to limit the participants to 256 swimmers, but 14 more than that had automatically qualified for the meet. Adding in eight relay-only swimmers, the new cap is now set at 278. None of the 22 additional swimmers came from the United States, but USA Swimming did recently experience a shakeup in their roster. Alex Meyer is no longer listed as participating in the 10K race in Mexico in a couple of weeks, which means the Americans will not have a swimmer in the men’s race. (Editor’s note: Arthur Frayler remains on the roster as a competitor in the men’s 10K, in addition to the 1500 free.) Meyer is already qualified for the Olympics in the 10K.<\/p>\n
The Auburn women’s swimming and diving team starts their dual meet season tonight against Arkansas in Auburn. NCAA champ Arianna Vanderpool-Wallace will be the headliner of the meet, likely swimming the 50 and 100 freestyles. The rest of the meet will consist of 200s of the strokes and distance freestyle, as well as a 200 medley relay and 800 free relay.
