PHOENIX, Arizona, September 29. AUSTRALIAN freestyler Kenrick Monk was involved in a hit-and-run accident yesterday in Brisbane, which resulted in two broken bones in his right elbow and could put his Olympic future in jeopardy. <\/p>\n
Monk was on his way to workout on his bicycle when a car hit him, knocking him unconscious. Three of Monk’s teammates – Stephanie Rice, Nick D’Arcy and Ned McKendry – were there to tend to Monk and take him to the hospital. D’Arcy, coincidentally, is a medical student and was able to assess the damage on the scene.
\nAs you can see from the photo, Monk is in good spirits now while recuperating in the hospital, but his emotions may change after he consults with a physical therapist about the extent of the damage to his arm. Monk could be out of the water for as long as eight weeks, which could mean a tough road back to prime shape in time for March’s Australian Olympic Trials, which are 24 weeks away. <\/p>\n
Monk has been a part of the Aussie 800 free relay since 2006, and has been a top 200 freestyler for the Aussies since Ian Thorpe retired, winning silver in the event at the 2010 Commonwealth Games and was 11th at this year’s world championships. At the world championships in Shanghai, Monk helped the Aussies finish fifth in the 800 free relay, an event that could have serious medal chances for the Aussies if Ian Thorpe’s comeback expectations come to fruition.<\/p>\n
Monk believes he was hit on purpose, and has given statements to police, including the license plate number of the car that hit him.<\/p>\n
A little further south in Gold Coast, the University Games concluded. The meet doesn’t seem to carry the same weight as the NCAA championships do here, though, as the top swimmers are posting times well off their season bests, mostly likely because they are in heavy training. Still, Marieke Guehrer was the star of the meet, winning 10 gold medals. She won three of those golds on the final day, in the 100 free, 200 free relay and 200 medley relay. Christian Sprenger made it a sweep of the breaststroke events with a win in the 50 breast today, and Kyle Richardson ended his meet with three individual golds in the freestyles, winning the 100 free today.
