GOLD COAST, Australia, September 27. THE long course meter swimming competition at the Australian University Games produced a handful of meet records to start the three-day event.<\/p>\n
Marieke Guehrer clipped Grace Loh, 29.05 to 29.08, in the women's 50 back to begin the day. Both times eclipsed the meet record of 29.69 set by Guehrer back in 2009. Karina Leane finished third overall in the sprint back with a 30.35.<\/p>\n
Guehrer doubled up with a 1:02.35 to win the women's 100 fly, well off her meet record of 1:01.38 from 2009. Emma Gray took second in 1:03.68, while Ashleigh McCleery picked up third in 1:04.53. <\/p>\n
Samantha Marshall crushed the women's 100 breast field with a meet-record time of 1:09.84. That performance smashed the mark of 1:12.54 set by Bianca Conwell back in 2000. Emily Selig, meanwhile, placed second in 1:12.07, also under the former standard. Hannah Mullen touched third in 1:15.13. <\/p>\n
Selig returned in the women's 200 IM for her second podium with a winning time of 2:22.09. Samantha Bennett touched second in 2:23.47, while McCleery snared her second podium as well with a 2:25.47 for third. <\/p>\n
Christian Sprenger nearly grabbed the men's 100 breast meet record with a winning 1:03.40. That swim just missed Brenton Rickard's standard of 1:03.25 from 2003. Nicholas Schafer (1:04.20) and Shaun Abbott (1:04.96) earned second and third.<\/p>\n
Andrew Gillespie won the men's 50 back in 26.53, while Atte Liimatanien finished second in 27.46. Raymond Mak turned in a third-place 27.60 in the event. Jade Neilsen topped the women's 200 free in 2:03.46, far surpassing Madeleine van Hunnik's second-place effort of 2:07.21. Jessica Morrison finished third in 2:07.37.<\/p>\n
Kyle Richardson claimed the men's 200 free title in 1:51.90, while Donald Cameron and Andrew Kennedy tied for second with matching times of 1:56.47. Mark O'Donnell nearly cracked the top three with a 1:56.87. Sam McConnell captured the men's 100 fly crown in 55.46. Shane Kingsbury (56.38) and Grant Irvine (58.10) placed second and third in the event.<\/p>\n
Stephen Parkes picked up the men's 200 IM title in 2:10.51. Mak took second in 2:12.09, while Andrew Kennedy finished third in 2:13.28. <\/p>\n
In relay action, Melbourne's Grace Loh, Samantha Marshall, Marieke Guehrer and Jessica Morrison won the women's 400 medley relay in meet-record time with a 4:20.05. That swim demolished the previous standard of 4:30.71 set by Queensland in 2010. Queensland Tech's Andrew Gillespie, Christian Sprenger, Grant Irvine and Kyle Richardson also took down a meet record with a 3:50.88 in the men's 400 medley relay.
