The reigning ACC swimming and diving champions for both the women and men, the NC State Wolfpack, kicked off the 2017-2018 campaign with a sweep of home meets against Duke and Penn State.<\/p>\n

The Wolfpack dominated the meet, which included posting wins in both 200 medley and 400 free relays, and the team lost just six events in the entire meet. For the women,\u00a0Ky-Lee Perry<\/strong> swept the 50 (22.47) and 100 free (49.38), and\u00a0Julia Poole\u00a0<\/strong>won the 200 free (1:49.38) and 200 IM (2:01.69).<\/p>\n

It was no surprise to see star senior\u00a0Hannah Moore\u00a0<\/strong>winning the 1000 (9:39.67) and 500 free (4:49.63) for the Wolfpack, but in a neat twist, her freshman sister\u00a0Kate Moore\u00a0<\/strong>also picked up a win in her first collegiate race, touching in 54.77 in the 100 back and also twice finishing second (200 back, 200 IM).<\/p>\n

For the NC State men,\u00a0Justin Ress\u00a0<\/strong>won the 100 back (47.36) and 100 fly (48.04), and\u00a0Andreas Vazaios\u00a0<\/strong>took first in both the 200 free (1:36.32) and 200 IM (1:47.12). Olympian\u00a0Ryan Held<\/strong>\u00a0skipped his signature sprint events but finished second behind Held in the 100 back (47.77) and fourth in the 200 IM (1:52.12).<\/p>\n

Penn State’s breaststrokers shined in Raleigh, as\u00a0Jane Donahue\u00a0<\/strong>won the women’s 100 breast in 1:03.32 and the 200 breast in 2:15.63. Her teammate\u00a0Kaelen Freund\u00a0<\/strong>swept the men’s 100 breast (54.55) and 200 breast (1:59.37), and he also took first-place points in the 200 IM (1:49.54) with Vazaios swimming exhibition.<\/p>\n

Duke’s two wins came in the women’s 200 fly, when\u00a0Isa Paez\u00a0<\/strong>touched in 1:59.38 to defeat Moore, and in men’s three-meter diving, with freshman\u00a0Teddy Zeng\u00a0<\/strong>(385.75).<\/p>\n

Georgia Tech at Notre Dame<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Notre Dame continued a hot start to the season with a home sweep of the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets. The Fighting Irish women dominated, winning the meet by a score of 203 to 95, and the Notre Dame men won a 175-125 triumph.<\/p>\n

For the women, sophomore Abbie Dolan<\/strong> stayed red-hot with her wins in the 50 (22.96) and 100 free (49.28). Dolan has been the conference\u2019s breakout swimmer during the season\u2019s first month.<\/p>\n

Teammate Sherri McIntee<\/strong>, meanwhile, picked up a sweep of the breaststroke events, winnign the 100 in 1:02.99 and the 200 in 1:03.08, while Alice Treuth <\/strong>won the 100 (54.30) and 200 back (1:56.50).<\/p>\n

Notre Dame actually won every women\u2019s swimming event on the day, including relays. Carly Quast<\/strong>, Meaghan O\u2019Donnell<\/strong>, Erin Sheehan <\/strong>and Dolan won the 400 medley relay in 3:39.31, leading an Irish 1-2-3 sweep. Dolan, Rachel Wittmer<\/strong>, Lauren Heller <\/strong>and Sofia Revilak Fonseca <\/strong>won the 400 free relay in 3:23.03.<\/p>\n

Georgia Tech\u2019s highlight performance came on the boards as freshman Cami Hidalgo <\/strong>won the one-meter (296.18) and three-meter (297.60) events).<\/p>\n

For the men, Notre Dame freshman Zach Yeadon <\/strong>again won both the 1000 (9:29.80) and 500 free (4:23.05), and in diving, teammate Joe Coumos <\/strong>won the one-meter (333.90) and three-meter (357.75). Georgia Tech picked up plenty of event wins, but Notre Dame\u2019s relay superiority proved critical in the 50-point win.<\/p>\n

The team of Robby Whitacre<\/strong>, Garrett Clarke<\/strong>, Justin Plaschka <\/strong>and Tabahn Afrik<\/strong> won the men\u2019s 400 medley relay in 3:15.09, and the Irish team of Afrik, Plaschka, Aaron Schultz<\/strong> and Whitacre was the only 400 free relay team under 3:00, coming in at 2:58.25.<\/p>\n

The Yellow Jackets had two double winners on the day when Caio Pumputis <\/strong>dominated the 200 free (1:36.81) before also winning the 200 IM (1:48.11), and Moises Loschi <\/strong>swept the men\u2019s 100 (54.88) and 200 breast (2:01.07).<\/p>\n

Queens, VMI, Liberty (women) at Virginia Tech<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The Virginia Tech Hokies swept through the Virginia Tech Challenge, remaining undefeated one week after sweeping Duke and Florida State in Durham. The VT women beat VMI 222-32, Queens 194-68 and Liberty 182-80. The Hokie mem, meanwhile, beat VMI 221-41 and Queens 164-95.<\/p>\n

Reka Gyorgy\u00a0<\/strong>won both the 200 free (1:50.15) and 200 breast (2:18.98) to lead the way for the Hokie women, while teammate\u00a0Emily Meilus\u00a0<\/strong>won the 100 (55.18) and 200 breast (2:01.61).<\/p>\n

None of the Virginia Tech men were double winners on the day, but\u00a0Ian Ho<\/strong> posted an impressive time of 19.85 in the 50 free, and\u00a0Norbert Szabo\u00a0<\/strong>won the 200 fly in 1:49.84. One week after being named ACC swimmer of the week<\/a>,\u00a0Lane Stone\u00a0<\/strong>passed on his typical distance events but still won the 200 free in 1:38.99. In his absence,\u00a0Michael Craddock<\/strong> won the 1000 free (9:29.76), and\u00a0Hassler\u00a0<\/strong>Carroll<\/strong> took first in the 500 (4:37.83).<\/p>\n

Virginia & LSU at Pitt<\/strong><\/h3>\n

After the first of two days in a three-team meet in Pennsylvania, the Cavaliers lead both the Tigers and Panthers in the team competition, while both Pitt teams lead LSU.<\/p>\n

The Virginia Cavaliers picked up wins in three of four relays (women’s 200 free, both 200 medley) on day one, along with seven individual victories. For the women,\u00a0Rachel Politi\u00a0<\/strong>won the 400 IM (4:21.16),\u00a0Jen Marrkand\u00a0<\/strong>took first in the 100 fly (54.69),\u00a0Emma Seiberlich<\/strong> claimed top honors in the 200 back (1:57.45),\u00a0Vivian Tafuto<\/strong> won the 100 breast (1:02.56), and\u00a0Morgan Hill<\/strong> came out on top in the 100 free (50.13).<\/p>\n

For the UVA men,\u00a0Bryce Keblish<\/strong> won the 100 fly in 49.20, and\u00a0Sam Magnan\u00a0<\/strong>continued his strong start to the season in the distance races with a 1000 free win (9:10.59).<\/p>\n

Pitt’s women saw\u00a0Amanda Richey\u00a0<\/strong>win the 1000 free in 9:57.00, and her teammates on the men’s side took three wins:\u00a0Samy Helmbacker\u00a0<\/strong>in the 400 IM (3:49.83),\u00a0Brian Ramsey\u00a0<\/strong>in the 100 breast (55.91) and\u00a0Brian Lovasik<\/strong> in the 100 free (44.78).<\/p>\n

Michigan at Louisville<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Louisville is well behind the Michigan Wolverines in both the women’s and men’s competitions after the first of two days in their dual meet. The Michigan women, who finished behind Louisville just last weekend at the SMU Classic, are up 123-44, and Michigan’s men lead 118-49.<\/p>\n

Louisville picked up only two wins on the day:\u00a0Nick Albiero\u00a0<\/strong>won the men’s 100 back in 48.56, and\u00a0Brianna Price\u00a0<\/strong>won three-meter diving with a score of 261.45.<\/p>\n

As impressive as\u00a0Mallory Comerford <\/strong>was\u00a0at SMU<\/a>, she managed only a fourth-place finish in the 500 free (4:50.86) and finished well behind\u00a0Siobhan Haughey<\/strong> in the 100 free, 48.36 to 49.00.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
