It\u2019s fun and gives us an opportunity to get away from home,\u201d said <strong>Beth Abrams<\/strong>, whose son <strong>Zach Senator<\/strong> is a sophomore attacker from Pacific Palisades, three hours away from Pomona\u2019s Southern California location. \u201cOur team doesn&#8217;t often make a trip like this so we thought we\u2019d go for it.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>At Harvard\u2019s Blodgett Pool on Sunday morning, Abrams and her fellow parents\u2019 devotion was richly rewarded. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sagehens.com\/sports\/mwaterpolo\/index\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Pomona-Pitzer<\/a> earned a hard-fought 7-6 victory over #19 Brown, with parents, siblings, friends and casual observers pulled into the excitement of one of the National Collegiate Athletic Association\u2019s more unusual sports.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cWe call him the \u2018Danimal!\u2019\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>David Deimer<\/strong>\u2014whose son Daniel is the team\u2019s animated goalie\u2014is clearly a source of his offspring\u2019s exuberance. Photo Courtesy: Andrea Gross<\/p><\/div>\n<p>As the final quarter winds to a close, frustrated Brown parents have had enough. One berates him for what she deems behavior unfit for water polo. Deimer, clearly not a fan who turns the other cheek, responds with a not-so-friendly gesture, further inflaming the Bear faithful, who have the compounded indignity of watching their team\u2014once ranked as high as #14 nationally\u2014fall to a team most of them have never heard of.<\/p>\n<p>Afterwards, taking in the surprisingly balmy New England weather outside Blodgett, Deimer turns out to be as congenial up close as he was combative during the match. Traveling from St. Louis, not known as a hotbed for the sport, Deimer and his wife Kathyrn seem genuinely thrilled to be right where they are in this particular moment.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe call him the \u2018Danimal!\u2019\u201d he announces, articulating his son\u2019s nickname with a pride of ownership<strong>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe California team travels well!\u201d Deimer then crows, gesturing to the large gaggle of blue and orange-clad fans. When asked why he came East, the doctor-turned-polo-fanatic quips: \u201cI was hoping Harvard would rub off on me and I\u2019d get smarter.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>David\u2019s mother\u2014decidedly more reserved than her husband\u2014expresses awe at her son\u2019s performance.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe most amazing things is that they have to come back right after they\u2019re scored on,\u201d said <strong>Kathyrn Diemer<\/strong>. \u201cThat\u2019s just what he does.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s dad\u2019s turn again. \u201cIt\u2019s tough to be a parent and watch water polo,\u201d Diemer admits.<\/p>\n<p><strong>In Unity, There\u2019s Strength.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If there\u2019s a strong bond between water polo families\u2014and this group appears as tightly knit as an extended family\u2014it\u2019s perhaps a by-product of both polo\u2019s postage-stamp scale at the intercollegiate level as well as how hard it is to play. Only 49 men\u2019s teams are eligible to compete for the NCAA men\u2019s national championship\u2014meaning perhaps 750 varsity athletes in the entire country.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe school spirit for [Pomona-Pitzer] athletics has been increasing year-to-year and our water polo group is tight,\u201d explains Beth Abrams. \u201cOur team is like a family. We all eat together and hang out.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>One specific unifier for this geographically diverse group is the allure of an elite academic institution that offers their sons a chance to play polo at the country\u2019s highest level. Pomona-Pitzer\u2019s roster represent almost every water polo-playing region in the country, from the East (Maryland and Pennsylvania) to the Midwest (Illinois and Missouri) to California, the mecca for American polo. Photo Courtesy: Andrea Gross<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Consisting of two of the best private liberal arts institutions in the country\u2014Pomona and Pitzer, both members of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.claremont.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Claremont Colleges consortium<\/a>\u2014the schools field joint teams that not only compete in DIII athletics, when it comes to water polo they excel.<\/p>\n<p>The Sagehens are 13-9 so far this season, including a 4-1 record in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thesciac.org\/sports\/mwaterpolo\/index\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference<\/a> (SCIAC). Four of their losses came at the hands of the country\u2019s best: #1 USC, #2 UCLA, #4 Stanford and #14 Princeton.<\/p>\n<p>Despite being one of the NCAA\u2019s smaller varsity programs, the Sagehens played big last year, capturing a bid to the 2016 NCAA Men\u2019s Water Polo Tournament. They faced eventual champs Cal in a play-in match for the Final Four, losing 16-6 in Berkeley.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPretty cool for a Division III team to get there,\u201d said Diemer, who, due to nerves, did not make that trip.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was at home in diapers,\u201d he joked.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Wither the noble Sagehen?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>When quizzed about what the school mascot represents, it was <strong>Stuart Senator<\/strong> who revealed the greatest depth of knowledge.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a species of bird\u2014not yet extinct\u2014and it lives a bit north of Pomona,\u201d Zach\u2019s father said. \u201cI\u2019ve never personally run across one but we should hold a Sagehen banquet one of these days.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In fact, there is a real-life corollary to Cecil the Sagehen, as the Pomona-Pitzer mascot is known. According to <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cecil_the_Sagehen\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Wikipedia<\/a>, the \u201cGreater Sage Grouse\u201d is a \u201cground-dwelling bird that can reach two feet in height and 30 inches in length.\u201d Its distinguishing trait? A long-pointed tail.<\/p>\n<p>What distinguishes this current crop of Sagehens are the bonds between and passion among parents that is both exceptional as well as all-to-familiar to polo fans.
