PHOENIX, Arizona, September 22. THE Chinese are holding their long course nationals this week, and the first day was highlighted by the country’s new superstar, Sun Yang. <\/p>\n
In the 200 free, Sun swam a 1:45.53 despite erratic training since his great performances at the world championships. Sun did not compete in the 200 free at worlds, and the time he swam today would have placed him sixth in that final. Sun’s best time of the year is a 1:44.99 from spring nationals, which would have tied him for fifth at worlds. Could we see Sun racing for gold in the 200 free in London? The final would be two days after the 400 free and four days before the 1500, his major event.<\/p>\n
An upset of sorts took place in the women’s 100 back. Fu Yuanhui won the race in 1:00.68, with reigning world champion Zhao Jing finishing third in 1:00.73. Zhao won her world championship title with a 59.05.<\/p>\n
One of the other big stars for China at the world championships, 200 IM gold medalist Ye Shiwen, decided not to compete this week, giving Li Xuanxu a clear path to victory in the women’s 400 IM with a time of 4:37.48. Jiao Liuyang, the reigning world champion in the women’s 200 fly, and Liu Zige, the 200 fly world record holder, also appear to be sitting out this meet. In their absence, Zhu Jiani won the race in 2:07.89.<\/p>\n
