LAUSANNE, Switzerland, September 18. THE team of Spain got its first victory in the FINA World Junior Women's Water Polo Championships (20 & Under), after beating Hungary in the decisive game of the ninth edition of this event, organised from September 11-17, 2011 in the Italian city of Trieste.<\/p>\n
Winning the Magyars 11-9 in the final, the Iberians got also their second presence in the podium of these championships, after being bronze medallists in 2003 in Calgary (CAN). This result was also an upgrade for Hungary, as they had been silver medallists twice, in 2007 (Porto, POR), and in 1999 (Messina, ITA).<\/p>\n
The third place in Trieste was occupied by Australia, after an easy win over Russia (winners in 2009, at home, in Khanty-Mansiysk) by 10-2. Australia had triumphed in 2007 and 1999.<\/p>\n
In the Mediterranean fight for fifth and sixth place, Italy was better than Greece, winning by a convincing 8-4. The top-8 was completed by the Netherlands (seventh) and United States (eighth, after losing with the Dutch by 9-11).<\/p>\n
16 teams took part in the tournament, which has been over the years a competition revealing many of the names that would then shine on a senior level. Open to players up to 20 years old, this event (held in odd years) will be completed from 2012 with the organisation on even years of the FINA World Youth Water Polo Championships (for athletes aged 18 and under).<\/p>\n
