{"id":280689,"date":"2017-10-16T07:06:58","date_gmt":"2017-10-16T14:06:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=280689"},"modified":"2017-10-16T07:37:15","modified_gmt":"2017-10-16T14:37:15","slug":"anthony-ervin-kneels-for-national-anthem-at-raia-rapida","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/anthony-ervin-kneels-for-national-anthem-at-raia-rapida\/","title":{"rendered":"Anthony Ervin Makes Statement After Kneeling for National Anthem at Raia Rapida"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The 2017 Raia Rapida challenge prides itself on fast swimming from sports icons around the globe.\u00a0By adding women to the mix, they hoped to stir up the action this year.<\/p>\n<p>But it was not only the female competitors that made the event more interesting this time around- three-time Olympic Gold medalist\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?s=Anthony+Ervin\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Anthony Ervin<\/strong><\/a> did so as well.<\/p>\n<p>According to a Tweet from <strong>A<\/strong><span class=\"username u-dir\" dir=\"ltr\"><b class=\"u-linkComplex-target\">lex Pussieldi<\/b>, a Brazilian swimming comentator,\u00a0Ervin knelt for the Americans&#8217; National Anthem prior to the start of competition:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-lang=\"en\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"es\">Fotos de Satiro Sodr\u00e9. <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/AnthonyErvin?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@AnthonyErvin<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/SR8b3mx9XB\">pic.twitter.com\/SR8b3mx9XB<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Coach Alex Pussieldi (@alexpussieldi) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/alexpussieldi\/status\/919662248867573760?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">October 15, 2017<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script src=\"\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" async=\"\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>His actions follow those of many professional athletes from a range of sports over the last month. The protests started in an NFL pre-season game last year, when San Francisco 49ers quarterback <strong>Colin Kaepernick<\/strong> sat down during the Anthem. &#8220;This is bigger than football,&#8221; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nfl.com\/news\/story\/0ap3000000691077\/article\/colin-kaepernick-explains-protest-of-national-anthem\" target=\"_blank\">he said<\/a> in 2016.<\/p>\n<p>Kaepernick said he was protesting the wrongdoings of black people in America, while more issues have come up since his original action.<\/p>\n<p>Ervin Tweeted the following after the competition:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-lang=\"en\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">My point is to save lives, and understand the imbalance. We all have our area. I&#8217;m a swimmer.<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Anthony Ervin (@AnthonyErvin) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/AnthonyErvin\/status\/919923093736366080?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">October 16, 2017<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Ervin has been known to make statements about similar issues in the past.\u00a0He\u00a0is part black, Native American, Italian and Jewish. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.teamusa.org\/News\/2016\/August\/01\/For-Olympic-Swimmer-Anthony-Ervin-Voyage-Of-Self-Discovery-Is-A-Long-Strange-Trip\" target=\"_blank\">In 2016<\/a>, he explained his experience as a black athlete in a predominantly-white sport. And when it comes to voicing his opinions and beliefs, Ervin has not been one to keep to himself:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #339966;\">\u201cI\u2019m always torn between trying to at least being able to steer what the public perception is of my public image is versus who I know I am in my personal space,\u201d Ervin said. \u201cI don\u2019t know what people think\u2026and I\u2019ve relinquished trying to understand what my public image is. Nothing about it has aggravated me to the point of being sick.\u201d<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The annual Raia Rapida event\u00a0did not show anything different from Ervin.
