PHOENIX, Arizona, September 6. TWO meets in the southern hemisphere topped the headlines this weekend. The Jose Finkel Trophy meet wrapped up in Brazil, and the All-Africa Games started on Sunday in Mozambique.<\/p>\n
Cesar Cielo had a great day on Saturday, winning the 100 free in 49.06, swimming a 23.90 in the 50 fly and posting a 48.7 split on the 400 free relay. Cielo would return to win the 50 fly final on Sunday with a 23.48.<\/p>\n
After swimming a 1:59.0 in the 200 IM at the world championships to take sixth place, Thiago Pereira won that event in Brazil with a 2:00.76. Pereira will be the swimmer to watch in the IM events next month at the Pan American Games.<\/p>\n
Felipe Silva backed up his world championship title in the 50 breast with a close win on Saturday in 27.49, about four tenths slower than his time in Shanghai. Joao Gomes, who could be a swimmer to watch in the sprint breaststrokes in the coming months, was second in 27.62.<\/p>\n
Across the Atlantic Ocean in Mozambique, the All-Africa Games are showcasing some of the best swimmers on the African continent, but the times are not as fast as we had expected, at least based on the partial results we’re getting from the meet. Cameron van der Burgh, for example, won the men’s 100 breast in 1:02:44, and Kirsty Coventry won the women’s 400 IM with a 4:44.34.<\/p>\n
