The USC men and women swept visiting Cal State Bakersfield while the women also downed Oregon State in the home openers for both squads on Friday night.<\/p>\n
The USC men downed Cal State Bakersfield, 201-94. The women beat the Roadrunners, 184-104, and took care of the Beavers, 203-88. Both the USC men and women improved to 3-0 on the season.<\/p>\n
USC opened the meet as senior Hannah Weiss<\/strong>, freshman Maggie Aroesty<\/strong>, sophomore Louise Hansson<\/strong> and freshman Marta Ciesla won the 200y medley in 1:41.16 while the men’s quartet of senior Ralf Tribuntsov<\/strong>, junior Billy Monjay<\/strong> and seniors Dylan Carter<\/strong> and Santo Condorelli<\/strong> won in 1:29.00.<\/p>\n Becca Mann<\/strong> led a 1-2-3 sweep in the women’s 1000y free in 9:57.06 with freshman Isabella Rongione<\/strong> (10:05.52) and junior Elizabeth Stinson<\/strong> (10:05.66) touching behind her. Senior Pawel Furtek<\/strong> followed with a win in the 1000y free (9:24.02) with Roadrunner Noah Hultner<\/strong> second (9:43.38).<\/p>\n Tatum Wade<\/strong> won the 200y free in 1:49.03 while redshirt senior Lexie Malazdrewicz<\/strong>, in her first competitive swim in over a year, took second in 1:50.05. Carter took the men’s race in 1:36.66, another B cut for this year, while junior Patrick Mulcare<\/strong> touched in 1:37.75, another B.<\/p>\n Weiss, the lone senior on the USC roster, won the 100y back in 55.66 with sophomore Abby Miller<\/strong> third (56.61). Tribuntsov dropped another NCAA B to win the men’s 100y back in 47.18.<\/p>\n Aroesty ran away with the 100y breast with a solid NCAA B 1:01.47. Bakersfield claimed its first win of the night as Jake Chir<\/strong> hit the wall in 56.17, Monjay second for the Trojans 57.67.<\/p>\n Junior Maddie Wright<\/strong>, in mid-season form, won the 200y fly with another B cut of 1:57.50 with freshman Caitlin Tycz<\/strong> second (1:59.84) and sophomore Catherine Sanchez third (2:00.08). Sophomore Mark Jurek<\/strong> took first in the men’s 200y fly (1:49.23) with junior Walker Bell<\/strong> second (1:50.47).<\/p>\n Ciesla, won the 50y free in 23.28 with Allie Wooden second (23.88). Loren Gillilan<\/strong> won Bakersfield’s second race with a 21.12 in the 50y free. USC’s Cash Deloache<\/strong> was second (21.31).<\/p>\n Cielsa came back from the break to win the 100y free in 50.65 with junior Victoria Toris second in 51.61. Malazdrewicz was third (51.77). Condorelli (44.67) beat Mulcare (44.87) to the wall to win the men’s 100y free.<\/p>\n Weiss won her second race with a 2:01.42 to take the 200y back with Miller second (2:03.48). Freshman Robert Glinta<\/strong>, USC’s new Olympian from Romania, took his specialty with a 1:46.01, good for a B cut. Senior Jon Knox was second in 1:48.56.<\/p>\n Junior Maddie Witt<\/strong> won the women’s 3-meter with 240.75, just ahead of sophomore Carly Souza<\/strong>‘s 236.40. Souza claimed the 1-meter with 224.70 with Witt second (217.58). In men’s 1-meter, sophomore Henry Fusaro<\/strong> (342.98) and senior Dashiell Enos<\/strong> (289.50) went 1-2 and they reversed it on 1-meter with Enos (355.58) edging out Fusaro (346.65).<\/p>\n Aroesty won her second race with an NCAA B 2:13.34 with Wade second (2:17.75). Bakersfield’s Chir won his second race in the 200y breast in 2:05.56, just out-touching Monjay’s 2:05.66.<\/p>\n Mann came back to win the women’s 500y free in 4:53.78 with Stinson and Bakersfield’s Jayssie Haynes<\/strong> tied for second (5:00.12). Freshman Jake Sannem<\/strong> won the men’s 500y free in 4:35.36, just beating Furtek to the wall by 0.32.<\/p>\n Wright won again to take the women’s 100y fly in 55.11 while junior Kyle Grissom<\/strong> entered the win column with a 48.40 in the men’s race. Hansson touched first in the 200y IM in a B time of 1:59.78 while Jurek won again in the men’s race with a 1:53.30.<\/p>\n USC closed the meet as Ciesla, Wooden, Sanchez and Wade won in 3:23.57 while USC’s men’s foursome of Carter, Condorelli, Glinta and Tribuntsov closed the meet with a win in 2:56.92.<\/p>\n No. 2 California finished off the two-day Chick-Fil-A Invitational with another strong set of events Saturday, as the Golden Bears claimed five of seven races and won the five-team event.<\/p>\n With Saturday’s results, Cal totaled victories in 16 of 20 events over the two days of competition. The Bears won the meet with 1318.5 points, over second-place San Diego State with 677 points. Nevada (654.5), Fresno State (518) and San Jose State (460) rounded out the results.<\/p>\n As the Bears did on Friday, many swimmers competed outside their normal events. Junior Kathleen Baker,<\/strong> the reigning NCAA champion in both backstroke events, won the 200-yard breaststroke in 2:16.58 to complement her victory in the 100 breast Friday.<\/p>\n Junior Katie McLaughlin<\/strong>, who typically swims longer events such as the 200 free or 200 butterfly, took first in the 100 free in 50.88.
