{"id":279765,"date":"2017-10-06T09:14:59","date_gmt":"2017-10-06T16:14:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=279765"},"modified":"2017-10-06T09:14:59","modified_gmt":"2017-10-06T16:14:59","slug":"sophie-pascoe-unleashes-s10-100-fly-world-record-in-new-zealand","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/sophie-pascoe-unleashes-s10-100-fly-world-record-in-new-zealand\/","title":{"rendered":"Sophie Pascoe Unleashes S10 100 Fly World Record in New Zealand"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Commentary by Dave Crampton, Swimming World Contributor.\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Champion paralympic swimmer <\/span><b>Sophie Pascoe<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is turning the New Zealand Short Course swimming championships into a checklist for world records, while younger women swimmers are also making their mark. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In her final morning event of the championships, Pascoe broke the S10 100m butterfly record in 1:03.03, beating the previous record h<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">eld by Australian <\/span><b>Paige Leonhardt<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by almost four seconds.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pascoe has set world records in six different events this week. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt\u2019s been a pleasure to be back home to race and be a part of a great week,\u201d she said. \u201cIt\u2019s <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">been tough, but tough is what I strive off.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She also wants to be an inspiration to other para-swimmers \u2013 but on the same basis as any other swimmer.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt\u2019s not about being an inspiration for your disability, it\u2019s about being an inspiration through hard work, and that\u2019s what drives me.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Also swimming in the same heat was <\/span><b>Mary Fisher<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, who lowered British swimmer <\/span><b>Elaine Barrett\u2019s<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> S11 world record, clocking 1:16.77. Their jobs done, they scratched from the evening finals.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pascoe <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">had planned to be at the world championships in Mexico, but they have been rescheduled to November due to the earthquake. Pascoe is not going to these championships; instead she will be concentrating on her preparation for next year\u2019s Commonwealth Games in Australia.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Commonwealth Youth Games medallist <\/span><b>Hannah Bates<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, 17, took out her first national open title, winning the 400m individual medley in 4:48.92, a five second personal best. She broke the New Zealand age group record in the 800m freestyle \u2013 her fourth age group record this week &#8211; clocking 8:58.05. \u00a0She was also seeded fifth in the 400m individual medley open final, but scratched for the longer distances. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fairweather admitted after the race that she was gunning for the record.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt feels great, I\u2019m really excited. The body is a bit sore now, but it should be good for the 100m free tomorrow.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Brearna Crawford,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> 14, set three national age group records this week, the latest being in the 100m butterfly, clocking 1:00.88, putting her second equal with Olympian <\/span><b>Helena Gasson<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> into the open final. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She scratched to keep fresh for the final day\u2019s racing today, but was surprised to match an Olympian, while coming off a chest infection.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI was, like, holy cow, I`ve just equalled Helena Gasson \u2013 it\u2019s not every day you get the same time as an Olympian,\u201d she said. \u00a0\u201cIt\u2019s pretty special.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The championships conclude
