Quebec City\u2019s Nicolas-Guy Turbide<\/strong> broke an Americas record and a Canadian record on the final night of competition at the Para-swimming Canadian Open at the Toronto Pan Am Sports Centre.<\/p>\n

Turbide\u2019s first record of the evening was the SM13 200-metre individual medley Americas record. He bested his own time by over two seconds touching in at 2 minutes, 15.06 seconds.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe meet went on, and it got better and better at every event,\u201d said Turbide. \u201cI couldn\u2019t have asked for anything better tonight by improving my Americans record in the 200 I.M. by even more than 2 seconds, which is something you don\u2019t see often.\u201d<\/p>\n

The 20-year-old\u2019s second record was a Canadian record in the S13 100-m freestyle. He broke Brian Hill\u2019s<\/strong> record from 1999 with a 56.35.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was a great meet for me and a great way to end the season and I know where I have to improve in the next couple of months to be a better swimmer next summer.\u201d<\/p>\n

Four other records were also broken on Wednesday. Aurelie Rivard broke a 200-m I.M. Americas records, while Jonathan Dieleman<\/strong>, Tammy Cunnington<\/strong> and Abi Tripp<\/strong> broke Canadian records in the 150-m I.M., and the 100-m freestyle.<\/p>\n

Rivard, of St-Jean-Sur-Richelieu, Que., smashed her own Americas record by over a full second in the SM10 200-m I.M. Her time of 2 minutes, 28.93 seconds bested her previous record of 2:30.03.<\/p>\n

Jonathan Dieleman<\/strong>, of Richmond Rapids Swim Club, broke a 20-year-old Canadian record in the SM4 150-m I.M. with a 3:17.41. The previous mark of 3:20.59 was set by Garth Harris in 1997.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt feels great. I\u2019ve been chasing this record since the Olympic Trials in 2016 so it feels good, a year and a half later, to actually break it by a good amount of time.\u201d<\/p>\n

Tammy Cunnington<\/strong> of Red Deer, Alta., broke her own Canadian record in the S4 100-m freestyle. Cunnington, 41, touched in with a 1:50.85.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m always looking for a personal best and because I hold the Canadian record for the S4, it\u2019s breaking two things at once. I was looking to be a little bit faster tonight than I was. I had a really good start and a controlled first 50 but I had a problem with my turn so it cost me a little bit of time.\u201d<\/p>\n

Sixteen-year-old Abi Tripp<\/strong> also took down a record in the 100-m freestyle. The Kingston, Ont., native broke Morgan Bird\u2019s<\/strong> S8 record in a time 1:09.07.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe were hoping to build momentum through the meet and we always want to finish strong and make the last day our best day,\u201d said Vince Mikuska<\/strong>, Swimming Canada\u2019s Senior Coach, Paralympic Program. \u201cTonight we had some really great results so hats off to the swimmers for staying focused, they were still here with an opportunity to compete and they took full advantage of it.\u201d<\/p>\n

The 2017 Para-swimming Canadian Open finished after three days of competition at the Toronto Pan Am Sports Centre.<\/p>\n
