Shields was the only swimmer under 1:50 in the finals of the event, and was under world record pace through the 100. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Because of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/prize-money-to-top-six-four-event-max-highlight-fina-2017-airweave-world-cup-changes\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">recent rules change to the FINA World Cup<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, le Clos had direct access to the final as the current world record holder. And while he did challenge Shields with a strong last 50, the American was able to hold him off for the win.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While taking down the world record holder in their own event is always significant, this swim should be a major confidence boost for Shields, who despite making the 2016 Olympic Team was left off of this summer\u2019s World Championship roster after <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/lilly-king-american-record-ella-eastin-dq-highlights-third-night-of-phillips-66-nationals\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">finishing fourth<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> at the 2017 U.S. Nationals. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shields and le Clos are tied in overall World Cup points with 75 each after the Hong Kong meet, so expect plenty more showdowns between these two in the coming weeks. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span
