My breathing was way better than normal.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Despite setting a record in the pool tonight, Vachon is already looking ahead.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe big thing for me is the 100-m backstroke tomorrow since it is a selection event for the Commonwealth Games,\u201d he said. \u201cIt\u2019s also my best event so I really want to do a good job in it.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-lang=\"en\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">RECORD ALERT: Philippe Vachon has set a Canadian record in the S8 100 fly in 1:06.39! <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/ParaswimmingOpen?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#ParaswimmingOpen<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/9A2FhhcXrM\">pic.twitter.com\/9A2FhhcXrM<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Swimming Canada (@SwimmingCanada) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/SwimmingCanada\/status\/914996637432516608?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">October 2, 2017<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script src=\"\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" async=\"\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>Canada had four swimmers in the women\u2019s 400-m freestyle. <strong>Aur\u00e9lie Rivard<\/strong>, the world record holder in the women\u2019s S10 400-m freestyle, finished the race with a time of 4:34.08.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt felt good. It was a good swim,\u201d said Rivard of St-Jean-Sur-Richelieu, Que. \u201cIt\u2019s been a challenging summer. We\u2019ve had so much happen in the last two weeks so I\u2019m very pleased with that race, it was a good icebreaker event.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>High Performance Centre \u2013 Quebec\u2019s <strong>Tess Routliffe<\/strong> was just off her best time as she posted a 5:41.14. <strong>Katarina Roxon<\/strong> of Kippens, N.L., put up a time of 5:16.59 and <strong>Sabrina Duchesne<\/strong> of St-Augustin, Que., swam 5:24.67.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Zach Zona<\/strong> competed in the men\u2019s 400-m freestyle where he posted a time of 4:48.69. Zona, of Waterford, Ont., is excited for Wednesday\u2019s 200-m individual medley where he hopes to qualify for the 2018 Commonwealth Games.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was pretty good. I\u2019m happy with the time, it was my best all year,\u201d said Zona. \u201cI want to make the Commonwealth Games team in the 200-m IM, which is my last race of the meet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Justine Morrier<\/strong> of the C.N. du Haut Richelieu was 0.01 short of her personal best time as she swam 1:13.04 in the women\u2019s 100-m butterfly. <strong>Morgan Bird<\/strong> of the Cascade Swim Club swam in the same heat as Morrier and put up a time of 1:21.00.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Samantha Ryan<\/strong> posted 1:10.92 in the second heat of the women\u2019s 100 fly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve had a little bit of a tough year training wise. I think my execution and process was done the way I wanted to so I\u2019m happy with the time under the circumstances,\u201d said Ryan, a Saskatoon native. \u201cI stayed focused and followed my race plan. I just want to stay focused and keep the momentum through the rest of the meet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In Routliffe\u2019s second race of the night, the 19-year-old finished the 50-m butterfly in 39.93. Her teammates <strong>Tammy Cunnington<\/strong> and <strong>Shelby Newkirk<\/strong> sprinted to 52.75 and 41.72 in the same race.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Alec Elliot<\/strong> of Kitchener, Ont., swam the 100-m butterfly in 58.39.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTonight was kind of a mixed bag,\u201d said <strong>Vince Mikuska<\/strong>, Swimming Canada\u2019s Senior Coach, Paralympic Program. \u201cWe had a Canadian record and some best times. This group often gets better as the meet goes on so we hope that we gather some momentum and keep rolling into tomorrow.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The 2017 Para-swimming Canadian Open continues through Wednesday at the Toronto Pan Am Sports Centre.
