LIMA, Peru, August 17. THE second evening of the FINA World Junior Championships featured another slew of meet records in the long course meter format competition.<\/p>\n
Australia's Bonnie Macdonald took down the meet record in the women's 800 free with an 8:32.30. That performance beat the 8:32.75 set by Elena Sokolova back in 2008. USA's Gillian Ryan finished second in 8:33.46, well short of her 14th-ranked season best of 8:27.64 set at U.S. Nationals. Spain's Claudia Dasca touched third in 8:34.29, shy of her 23rd-ranked 8:31.92 from Barcelona in June.<\/p>\n
USA's Lia Neal shot down the meet mark in the women's 100 free semifinals with a 55.18. That performance cleared the 55.59 set by Daniella Schreiber back in 2006. Australia's Bronte Campbell placed second in 55.47, also under the former record. USA's Simone Manuel wrapped up the top three in 56.08. <\/p>\n
Ukraine's Daryna Zevina downed her meet record in the women's 100 back with a winning time of 1:00.59 in the finale. That swim beat her 1:00.92 from yesterday. China's Fu Yuanhui took second in 1:01.13, while Great Britain's Emma Saunders finished third in 1:02.35. <\/p>\n
Japan's Kosuke Hagino twice lowered the meet record in the men's 200 IM. During prelims, Hagino clocked a 2:02.00 to beat the 2:02.28 set by Dimitri Colupaev back in 2008. Hagino returned in the finale with a 2:00.90 to nab the title. Greece's Andreas Vazaios touched second in 2:01.64, while Ukraine's Maksym Shemberev finished third in 2:02.37. <\/p>\n
USA's Jacob Pebley snared the men's 100 back title in 55.01, just missing Daniel Bell's meet record of 54.99 from 2008. Pebley, 17, inches closer to Aaron Peirsol's national age group record of 54.47 in the 17-18 age group. Italy's Fabio Laugeni touched second in 5.68, while Japan's Kosuke Hagino earned third in 55.69.<\/p>\n
Spain's Judit Ignacio topped the women's 200 fly in 2:08.25, missing the meet record of 2:08.10 set by Natsuki Akiyama in 2008. Ignacio's top time this year is a 12th-ranked season best of 2:07.87 from Spanish Nationals in April. Italy's Alessia Polieri placed second in 2:09.65, while Japan's Miyu Otsuka wound up third in 2:11.35. <\/p>\n
Canada's Chad Bobrosky knocked off Poland's Pawel Werner, 1:49.13 to 1:49.39, in the men's 200 free. Australia's Cameron McEvoy picked up third in 1:50.12. <\/p>\n
Italy's Lisa Fissneider captured the women's 50 breast in 31.51, while USA's Sarah Haase finished second in 31.84. France's Claire Polit posted a third-place 31.95.<\/p>\n
In the men's 100 breast final, Craig Benson of Great Britain got his hand on the wall first in a meet record time of 1:01.34, beating the 1:01.98 set by Japan's Akihiro Yamaguchi in the semifinals. Yamaguchi finished second in the final with a 1:01.54, and Greece's Panagiotis Samilidis took the bronze in 1:01.64.<\/p>\n
