THE first two gold medals were awarded Thursday at the AT&T National Diving Championships, with Amanda Burke (Southampton, Pa./Indianapolis, Ind.) winning the women's 1-meter and Amy Korthauer (Naperville, Ill./Bloomington, Ind.) and Amy Cozad (Decatur, Ind./Bloomington, Ind.) winning the women's synchronized 10-meter contest.

Burke came out on top in a close 1-meter final that came down to the last round, finishing with 270.10 points to beat out Erin Mertz (Omaha, Neb./West Lafayette, Ind.) by just a tenth of a point. Samantha Pickens (Murrysville, Pa./Tucson, Ariz.) finished third with 264.05 points. Burke trailed Mertz by 1.2 points heading into the final round, when Mertz scored 54.60 on her reverse 1 ½ with 1 ½ twists and Burke earned 55.90 points on her front 1 ½ with 2 twists to move into the top spot.

"It still doesn't feel like I won, but I'm more confident now that I have more competitions under my belt. At the World Championships trials (in May), I had my best list ever, and that helped me understand myself better," Burke said. "I just wanted to keep that momentum going and just keep doing my routine. Hopefully this carries over to 3-meter (on Friday)."

Cozad and Korthauer scored 295.92 points to win their first national title, with silver going to Jessica Parratto (Dover, N.H./Indianapolis, Ind.) and Anna James (Midland, Texas) at 291.00. After a miss in round three, the Indiana Diving teammates moved past Parratto and James when they hit their inward 3 ½ tuck for 85.44 points in round four.

"We did well, but we didn't hit everything the way we can," Korthauer said. "But, it feels good. I just had the same mindset as I did (Wednesday in individual 10-meter), and that was that I had two things to think about: stay tight and keep my feet together."

Sisters Haley and Victoria Ishimatsu (Seal Beach, Calif.) finished third with 264.42 points.

In other action Thursday, Troy Dumais (Ventura, Calif./Austin, Texas) led the field of divers advancing to Saturday's men's 3-meter finals, finishing first with 454.85 points in the semifinals. Chris Colwill (Brandon, Fla./Athens, Ga.) earned the second qualifying spot with 440.35 points, and Drew Livingston (The Woodlands, Texas/Austin, Texas) scored 426.60 points for third. Dumais will also be joined in the finals with his two brothers, as Justin (Ventura, Calif./Orlando, Fla.) placed fourth and Dwight (Ventura, Calif./Austin, Texas) sixth to advance.

AT&T National Diving Championships
Results – August 11, 2011

Men's 3-meter Semifinal (top 12 advance to finals)
1.
