PHOENIX, Arizona, August 10. MARCUS Titus is mostly known as a breaststroker, but yesterday at the World Deaf Swimming Championships, he swam a 50 butterfly and won with a time of 25.17. This puts him at three gold medals so far at the meet, with the 100 breast to take place tomorrow, and Titus likely on a medley relay.<\/p>\n
Back here in the States, Janet Evans took some time out of her quest to make the 2012 Olympic team by throwing out the ceremonial first pitch at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles last night. Evans competed for the first time since the 1996 Olympics last June with a couple of Masters world records in the 400 and 800 freestyles. The times she swam weren't fast enough to qualify her for the USA Swimming nationals, but she has said her goal is to compete at the U.S. Olympic Trials.<\/p>\n
London is in the middle of its worst rioting in 30 years, but Olympic organizers are still going forward as scheduled with test events in all the sports that will be contested next year. Yesterday, beach volleyball had its test event in London, with organizers cutting the schedule short each day so fans, athletes and officials could be safe before dark. The open water test event is scheduled to be held Saturday in Hyde Park, with no plans as of yet to re-schedule or cancel altogether.
