The University of Chicago Department of Athletics & Recreation announced the hiring of Mark Broucek<\/strong> as Assistant Swim Coach and Assistant Director of Aquatics.<\/p>\n

“Mark has a very impressive resume and list of accomplishments,” said Head Swim Coach Jason Weber<\/strong>. “With over 25 years of coaching experience and expertise, I believe Mark will make an immediate impact coaching and working with our swimmers. I’m excited to work with a coach of Mark’s caliber and look forward to having him help our team take the next step toward becoming one of the elite Division III swimming programs in the country.”<\/p>\n

For the past two years, Broucek served as Head Coach and Director of Competitive Aquatics for the Egyptian Shooting Club in Cairo. He coached more than 80 Age Group and Open National Champions, while placing 12 swimmers on the Egyptian National Open Water and Pool Teams.<\/p>\n

From 2009-15, Broucek worked for North Central College as the Head Swimming Coach, Learn to Swim Director and HPE Faculty in Exercise Science.<\/p>\n

Over the course of his career, Broucek has coached eight Olympic Trials qualifiers and was the USA Swimming National Open Water Coach from 1992-95. He also coached the World Championships silver medalist in the 25K Open Water. His Master’s thesis was published in the Journal of Sport and Exercise Science<\/em> and subsequently presented at the Scientific Congress of the Seoul Olympics in 1988.<\/p>\n

Broucek was a three-time finalist for National YMCA Coach of the Year from 1998-2000, and guided the YMCA National Championship team runner-ups in 2000.<\/p>\n

As a swimmer, Broucek competed in the 1980 Olympic Team Trials. He earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Arizona State University.<\/p>\n

Three of his book reviews have been featured in the Journal of Sport History<\/em> and he has 12 published works in literature and science. He was also a presenter at the ATINER\u00a0Ninth-Annual International Conference on Kinesiology and Exercise Sciences in Athens, Greece (2013).<\/p>\n
