The tournament schedule is available <a href=\"http:\/\/usctrojans.com\/sports\/2017\/8\/29\/2017-mountain-pacific-invitational-central.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">online<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>A lone Eastern squad will make the trip West for the tournament. #12 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/at-its-own-invitational-princeton-proves-to-be-easts-best\/\" target=\"_blank\">Princeton<\/a> will face #6 Long Beach State today at 4:45 p.m. PST. In addition to the Golden Bears, defending NCAA champs, #2 USC will face San Jose State, #3 Stanford will take on #19 Pomona-Pitzer, and #4 UCLA, winner of last year&#8217;s Invitational, will play #20 Loyola Marymount.<\/p>\n<p>One of the more intriguing teams in the bracket is #5 University of Pacific, which has a first day match with #16 UC San Diego. In recent comments referencing when his team was still a member of the MPSF, the Tigers\u2019 <strong>James Graham<\/strong> spoke about the challenge of playing the nation\u2019s very best while the season was still young.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Pac-12 had a very good thing going with the MPSF conference and the way the tournament schedule was built to favor them in the at-large bid process,\u201d said Graham, in his 10th season as head coach for the Pacific men.<\/p>\n<p>In 2015, with men\u2019s polo on the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.waterpoloplanet.com\/HTML_guest_pages\/65_guest_randazzo.html\" target=\"_blank\">horizon<\/a> as part of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gccwaterpolo.com\/fullStandings\/0\/3.php\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Golden Coast Conference<\/strong><\/a> (GCC), the Tigers decided to skip NorCal that September, perhaps irrevocably altering the format of the tournament and\u2014ultimately\u2014the MPSF. Last year five breakaway MPSF teams\u2014Pacific, Long Beach State, Pepperdine, UC Santa Barbara and UC Irvine\u2014began play in the GCC\u2019s men\u2019s bracket. For 2017 the conference will have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/2017-mens-water-polo-preview-golden-coast-conference\/\" target=\"_blank\">its own automatic berth <\/a>for the NCAA Men\u2019s Water Polo Tournament, decided at the GCC\u2019s conference tournament in mid-November.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe were one of the teams back in 2015 that chose not to go to the NorCal in September,\u201d Graham explained. \u201cPreviously, all the MPSF team always went. But it\u2019s an unfair playing field geared to eliminate non-Pac-12 teams from the at-large bid.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Graham, the 2017 Golden Coast Conference <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gccwaterpolo.com\/article\/550.php\" target=\"_blank\">Women\u2019s Coach of the Year <\/a>for his work leading Pacific\u2019s women to their first-ever NCAA berth, believes the changed format\u2014one three-day tournament rather than two 2-day events\u2014has helped to create more competition at the top of men\u2019s game, opening up a spot for the Tiger men in the discussions regarding the country\u2019s top teams.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think there is going to be more parity,\u201d he said about the 2017 men\u2019s season, then\u2014in reference to how Cal, Stanford, UCLA are often referred to in the press\u2014Graham added: \u201cI\u2019d like to get rid of the &#8216;Big Four&#8217; and make it a &#8216;Big Five&#8217; or eliminate it all together. As much as they\u2019ve been up there every year, we\u2019ve been in the top four three of the past four years.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Pacific\u2019s likely opponent for Saturday\u2019s second day is UCLA. The Tigers last beat the Bruins in 2013. Other prospective second day match-ups of note include: Stanford vs. the Princeton\/Long Beach State winner; USC vs. the UC Santa Barbara\/UC Irvine winner.<\/p>\n<p>The Mountain Pacific Invitational concludes Sunday with a tournament final at 2:30pm at USC.
