BRENDAN Hansen definitely brought the noise yesterday with a pair of 1:00 swims in the 100 breaststroke, and drew the eyes of the entire swimming community with it. What will day two of preliminary qualifying hold for the USA Swimming Long Course Nationals taking place in Palo Alto, Calif.?

Women's 100 back
Tennessee's Jennifer Connolly paced prelims in the 100 back with a top time of 1:01.05. Not far behind, just off her breakthrough meet internationally at the FINA World Long Course Championships, Colorado Stars' Missy Franklin finished second in 1:01.09. It should be interesting this evening to see if Franklin has enough in her tank to challenge her seventh-ranked season best of 59.56 from March.

NBAC's Elizabeth Pelton, also back from Worlds, qualified third in 1:01.24, and has a 15th-ranked 1:00.14 season best this year from Worlds. Aquajets' Rachel Bootsma, who was named Swimming World Female High School Co-Swimmer of the Year this month, qualified fourth in 1:01.47.

Athens Bulldog Megan Romano (1:01.59) and Crow Canyon's Madison White (1:01.74) qualified fifth and sixth, while Bluefish's Elizabeth Beisel might be wondering if this week's packed schedule is what she gets as a reward for winning her first world title with a victorious 400 IM last week. Beisel qualified seventh with a 1:01.95, after having a 200 IM/400 free double last night.

Greater Columbus' Mary Kate McNeilis (1:02.04), West Coast's Cindy Tran (1:02.21) and Tucson Ford's Lauren Smart (1:02.27) also made their way to the championship heat.

Athens Bulldog Kristen Shickora led the way to the B final with a 1:02.28. Tucson Ford's Sarah Denninghoff (1:02.37), Auburn's Emil Bos (1:02.45), Wyoming's Kelsey Conci (1:02.48) and Athens Bulldog Lauren English (1:02.57) qualified 12th-15th.

Stanford's Elizabeth Webb (1:02.64), Mission Aurora's Bonnie Brandon (1:02.65), Northern Kentucky Clipper Ellen Williamson (1:02.73), North Carolina's Carly Smith (1:02.83) and Minnesota's Tess Behrens (1:02.87) comprised the rest of the top 20 to make the B final.

Men's 200 free
Gator's Brett Fraser posted the top time in the morning with a 1:47.56, moving to 19th in the world rankings with the effort. But, as an international swimmer will not swim in the A final. Peter Vanderkaay, training down in Florida with Gator but still representing the Oakland Live Y'ers, qualified second in 1:48.07.

Longhorn's Dax Hill (1:48.38), Snow's Matt McLean (1:48.49), FAST's Michael Klueh (1:48.60), Trojan's Ricky Berens (1:48.69), New South's Doug Robison (1:48.83), Virginia's Peter Geissinger (1:49.21), Tucson Ford's Adam Ritter (1:49.38) and Club Wolverine's Matt Patton (1:49.52) also earned A final qualifying times in the morning.

FAST's Tyler Clary finished just outside the top 10 to wind up in the B final with an 11th-place 1:49.81. Longhorn's Jackson Wilcox (1:49.89), Charlie Houchin (1:50.02), Lakeview's Clay Youngquist (1:50.08) and Lake Forest's Conor Dwyer (1:50.24) qualified 12th-15th.

Stanford's Morgan Priestley (1:50.26), Longhorn's Austin Surhoff (1:50.51), California's Sam Metz (1:50.59), Tucson Ford's Giles Smith (1:50.62) and Stanford's Bobby Bollier (1:50.86) snared the rest of the B final transfer spots.

Men's 100 back
Similar to Brendan Hansen using this meet to declare his worth after not being able to qualify for Worlds due to the timing of him coming back out of a lengthy hiatus, Tucson Ford's Matt Grevers will be looking to make a statement after missing the Worlds team during last summer's qualifying. This morning, Grevers clocked a 53.96 in the event , and will be looking to better his eighth-ranked season best of 53.35 from the Paris Open in June.

Meanwhile, Ryan Lochte grabbed the second-seeded time with a 54.00 after becoming just the fourth man to win at least five gold medals in a single world championships at the meet last week. SwimMAC's Nick Thoman (54.19) and Eugene Godsoe (54.31) qualified third and fourth.

Auburn's Kyle Owens (54.52), California's David Russell (54.58), Gator's Ben Hesen (54.61), Minnetonka's David Plummer (55.02), Arkady Vyatchanin (55.10) and Schroeder's Mitchell Friedemann (55.13) also qualified for the championship field. Vyatchanin, however, as an international swimmer will not compete in the A final.

Schroeder's Adam Mania (55.15), Corvallis' Jacob Pebley (55.31), Bolles' Ryan Murphy (55.43), Auburn's Kohlton Norys (55.48), Daytona Beach's Rex Tullius (55.50), Ohio State's Andrew Elliott (55.55) and NBAC's Patrick Murphy (55.58) picked up 11th-17th to qualify for the B final. Hershey's David Nolan, the newly-crowned Swimming World Male High School Swimmer of the Year, qualified 18th in 55.71. Trojan's James Lendrum (55.76) and SwimMAC's Kip Darmody (55.80) rounded out the B final field.

Men's 200 fly
Club Wolverine's Daniel Madwed picked up the top seed with a leading time of 1:57.59 out of prelims, while SwimMAC's Davis Tarwater checked in second with a 1:57.81.
