Carleton College will hold its annual hour of power relay on Tuesday, November 14 across the country at 5 p.m. Eastern. The annual relay is in honor of Ted Mullin<\/strong>, who passed away in the fall of 2006 from sarcoma, a rare soft-tissue cancer.<\/p>\n

Mullin\u00a0was a three-year letter winner for Carleton College from 2003-2005. He was voted captain by his teammates for his senior season in the fall of 2005, but his cancer had returned and he was unable to compete. Mullin had raised more than $5,000 for cancer research in his college career as he co-captained two American Cancer Society “Relay for Life” teams.<\/p>\n

Funds raised through this event support research at the University of Chicago Medicine into the causes and treatment of sarcoma in young people. When the event began in 2006 shortly after Mullin’s death, 15 teams joined together to raise $11,000 for sarcoma research. By 2016-17, participation included 163 teams and 7,750 athletes. Over the past 11 years, participants in the \u201cHour of Power\u201d raised more than $667,000 for the Ted Mullin Fund for Pediatric Sarcoma Research at the University of Chicago Medicine Comer Children\u2019s Hospital.<\/p>\n

The relay is an hour of continuous relays. Swimmers can swim any stroke all-out, as long as each lane is on the same length. Teams are encouraged to swim the relay at the same time as the 5 p.m. window, but those teams unable to participate are also encouraged to hold a relay whenever possible.<\/p>\n

The participants in the event are asked to gather donations for the Ted Mullin Fund for Pediatric Sarcoma Research at the University of Chicago Medicine Comer Children’s Hospital.<\/p>\n
