U.S. Olympian\u00a0Jessica Hardy\u00a0<\/strong>and her husband,\u00a0Dominik<\/strong> Meichtry<\/strong>,\u00a0<\/strong>announced Sunday that they are expecting their first child, a girl, next spring. The two have been married since Oct. 5, 2013.<\/p>\n

Hardy wrapped up her competitive swimming career last summer after making the final in the women’s 100 breast at Olympic Trials. She was a member of senior U.S. international teams from 2005 until 2015, and she broke world records in the 100 breast in both 2005 and 2009 and in the 50 breast in 2009.<\/p>\n

Hardy remained the American record-holder in both sprint breaststroke events in long course until this summer, when\u00a0Lilly King<\/strong> lowered both world records.<\/p>\n

Hardy originally qualified for the U.S. Olympic team in two individual events plus relays in 2008, but she withdrew from the team after testing positive for a banned substance. She was suspended two years, but an appeal later reduced the suspension to one year, and she broke world records in the first meet after her return.<\/p>\n

She went on to win both the 100 free and 50 free at the U.S. Olympic Trials in 2012, but even though breaststroke was her specialty throughout most of her career, she never competed in that stroke in the Olympics.<\/p>\n

Meichtry, a native of Switzerland, met Hardy when both were competing at Cal between 2005 and 2007. He competed in both the 2008 and 2012 Olympics, and he was a finalist in the 200 free in 2008. He’s most famous for beating Michael Phelps\u00a0<\/strong>head-to-head in their prelims heat of the 200 free in Beijing.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
