﻿{"id":277395,"date":"2017-09-14T09:30:41","date_gmt":"2017-09-14T16:30:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=277395"},"modified":"2017-09-14T07:58:49","modified_gmt":"2017-09-14T14:58:49","slug":"at-its-own-invitational-princeton-proves-to-be-easts-best","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/at-its-own-invitational-princeton-proves-to-be-easts-best\/","title":{"rendered":"At Its Own Invitational Princeton Proves to be East&#8217;s Best"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>By Michael Randazzo, Swimming World Contributor<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Now in its 20th year, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/pair-of-east-coast-tournaments-open-2017-mens-varsity-water-polo-season\/\" target=\"_blank\">Princeton Invitational <\/a>men\u2019s water polo tournament presents the ideal early season test for identifying East Coast championship contenders\u2014and pretenders\u2014alike. Fourteen teams from all over the country gathered at the <strong>DeNunzio Pool<\/strong> last weekend to play a total of 25 matches. It was a veritable smorgasborg of polo, with East versus West a prevailing theme.<\/p>\n<p>As expected, the West came out ahead, winning 8 of 13 matches between the two coasts, but the gap wasn\u2019t as great as in years past. First, there was only one top four team, UCLA, at the tournament. Last year the top ranked Bruins and Cal\u2014which went on to win the 2016 NCAA title\u2014led the West to wins in 16 of 23 matches. Photo Courtesy: Beverly Schaefer<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.uclabruins.com\/index.aspx?path=mwpolo\" target=\"_blank\">Bruins<\/a> (7-0) easily went undefeated in games against Brown, George Washington, Johns Hopkins and St. Francis, but found the going much more difficult on Sunday in a nationally televised game against previously undefeated Princeton. The Tigers stayed within three scores until late in the fourth period on the strength of six goals by senior <strong>Jordan Colina<\/strong>\u2014tying a career high\u2014before UCLA pulled out a 14-8 win. In a positive sign for a squad fielding ten freshmen, first-year players <strong>Nicolas Saveljic<\/strong> and <strong>Chasen Travisano<\/strong> each tallied four goals for the visitors, including two by Saveljic in the waning minutes that padded the final score.<\/p>\n<p>Despite the loss, #12 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.goprincetontigers.com\/index.aspx?path=mwpolo\" target=\"_blank\">Princeton<\/a> (7-1) emerged from its own tournament as the East\u2019s best team, as the Tigers\u2019 top contenders were shown to have deficiencies. #11 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gocrimson.com\/sports\/mwaterpolo\/index\" target=\"_blank\">Harvard<\/a> (5-2) went 3-0 on the weekend but need to put up ten second half goals to pull away from unranked Chapman. The Crimson also had to dig deep for a 10-9 nail-biting win over a struggling <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bucknellbison.com\/SportSelect.dbml?DB_OEM_ID=32100&amp;SPID=141809&amp;KEY=\" target=\"_blank\">Bucknell<\/a> squad.(1-6).<\/p>\n<p>#14 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.brownbears.com\/sports\/m-wpolo\/index\" target=\"_blank\">Brown<\/a> (6-4) went 3-1 over the weekend\u2014the one loss coming at the hands of UCLA by an 18-2 score\u2014and eeked out a 6-5 win against unranked <a href=\"http:\/\/fordhamsports.com\/index.aspx?path=mwpolo\" target=\"_blank\">Fordham<\/a> (4-3). Yen<\/p><\/div>\n<p># 16 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sfcathletics.com\/index.aspx?path=mwater\" target=\"_blank\">St. Francis Brooklyn<\/a> (2-5) went 2-1; a 12-3 loss to UCLA dropped new Terrier coach <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/new-st-francis-brooklyn-mens-water-polo-coach-exudes-confidence\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Bora Dimitrov<\/strong><\/a> to 0-5 before his squad gutted out a 7-6 win over Bucknell in a match distinguished by some <a href=\"https:\/\/www.totalwaterpolo.com\/2017\/09\/11\/fan-stands-st-francis-vs-bucknell\/\" target=\"_blank\">curious calls <\/a>by the referees. In a decisive 13-7 win over the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.navysports.com\/sports\/m-wpolo\/navy-m-wpolo-body.html\" target=\"_blank\">U.S. Naval Academy<\/a> (5-5), St. Francis demonstrated the offensive firepower that might push Princeton for the top spot in the <a href=\"http:\/\/collegiatewaterpolo.org\/varsity\/schedules\/mensvarsity\/2017mennortheastwpschedule\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Northeast Water Polo Conference<\/strong><\/a>. The Terriers and Tigers will meet in Brooklyn on October 11.<\/p>\n<p>Before that contest, Princeton will travel out West as the only representative of it&#8217;s coast at the <strong>Mountain Pacific Sports Federation<\/strong> (MPSF) <a href=\"http:\/\/usctrojans.com\/sports\/2017\/8\/29\/2017-mountain-pacific-invitational-central.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">Invitational<\/a>. Taking place on September 22-24 in Los Angeles at USC and LMU\u2019s pools, the Tigers will have an opportunity to make a statement against the country&#8217;s best on their home turf, starting with a Friday afternoon match against #6 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.longbeachstate.com\/sports\/m-wpolo\/sched\/lbst-m-wpolo-sched.html\" target=\"_blank\">Long Beach State<\/a>.
