﻿{"id":276811,"date":"2017-09-08T05:48:59","date_gmt":"2017-09-08T12:48:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=276811"},"modified":"2017-09-08T05:48:59","modified_gmt":"2017-09-08T12:48:59","slug":"ipc-elects-brazils-andrew-parsons-as-new-president","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/ipc-elects-brazils-andrew-parsons-as-new-president\/","title":{"rendered":"IPC Elects Brazil&#8217;s Andrew Parsons as New President"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Andrew Parsons<\/strong> of Brazil was elected as the International Paralympic Committee\u2019s (IPC) new President\u00a0<span class=\"aBn\" tabindex=\"0\" data-term=\"goog_1229935838\"><span class=\"aQJ\">on Friday<\/span><\/span>\u00a0(8 September) following one round of voting at the 18th IPC General Assembly in Abu Dhabi, UAE.<\/p>\n<p>Parsons was chosen ahead of fellow presidential candidates <strong>Patrick Jarvis<\/strong>, <strong>John Petersson<\/strong> and <strong>Haidi Zhang<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am absolutely delighted and I don\u2019t know what to say. I would like to thank the IPC membership for their trust\u201d said Parsons, who becomes only the third President in IPC history.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThroughout my campaign I think I have explained what I plan to do as IPC President and the membership understood and gave me their support.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNow it is time to roll up the sleeves and work really hard with the membership and the new Governing Board.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think the election, winning in the first round, shows very strong support from the membership.\u00a0 It shows they trust me and I am really delighted.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGoing forward the relationship with the IOC is going to be key.\u00a0 We have some very important decisions ahead; sport is at a difficult moment at this time and we have many things in common that we have to fight for.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It is fundamental that we work together, co-operate and I am sure we will do that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The new President also paid tribute to his predecessor <strong>Sir Philip Craven<\/strong> who <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/ipc-president-sir-philip-craven-steps-down-after-transforming-paralympic-movement\/\" target=\"_blank\">stood down today after 16 years in the role<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSir Philip is a legend, a mentor, an example and an absolute colossus, it\u2019s impossible to describe him with just words.\u00a0 I have very big shoes to fill but I think I learned a lot from him and I will try to pay tribute to him by following in his footsteps.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The President was elected by secret ballot by the IPC membership which is made up of National Paralympic Committees, International Federations, International Organisations for the Disabled and Regional Organisations.<\/p>\n<p>Sir Philip Craven said: \u201cI would like to congratulate Andrew on his victory which was achieved in the first round and wish him the best of luck in his new role.\u00a0 I would also like to pay tribute to Patrick Jarvis, John Petersson and Haidi Zhang for their election campaigns.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A total of 163 members, plus the Americas Paralympic Committee, were in attendance for\u00a0<span class=\"aBn\" tabindex=\"0\" data-term=\"goog_1229935839\"><span class=\"aQJ\">Friday\u2019s<\/span><\/span>\u00a0election and eligible to vote.<\/p>\n<p>In the first round 162 members voted and Parsons secured 84 votes having needed an absolute majority of 82 to win.<\/p>\n<p>For the role of Vice President <strong>Duane Kale<\/strong> was elected in a closely fought race which 160 members voted in.\u00a0 The New Zealand four-time Paralympic champion polled 81 votes while <strong>John Petersson<\/strong> polled 79.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is a little bit surreal but I am elated.\u00a0 It will take time to sink in,\u201d said Kale.\u00a0 \u201cThis has to be one of the most wonderful things to happen to me life wise.\u00a0 I am very emotional.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am really looking forward to working with the new Membership after six rounds of voting.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Chelsey Gotell<\/strong>, the IPC Athletes\u2019 Council Chairperson, who also forms part of the IPC Governing Board, said: \u201cI would like to congratulate all the members of the new IPC Governing Board on their election.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am looking forward to working with the new President and the new Board to ensure the IPC is an athlete centred organisation and the athlete voice is heard at the executive table.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Governing Board will serve a four-year term with elections next held in 2021.\u00a0 It will hold
